Jack Bruce Classe, creatività, eclettismo – Italian/English Version

Le tre qualità artistiche citate nel titolo di questo Goodbye riassumono ed esauriscono in gran parte il talento che ha prodotto la carriera musicale, durata quasi mezzo secolo, di Jack Bruce. Il celeberrimo bassista scozzese dei Cream, una delle più rivoluzionarie rock band del XX° secolo, è deceduto il 25 Ottobre 2014 a 71 anni, dopo una lunga lotta con un cancro al fegato. Nel 2003 ne aveva subito un trapianto con un conseguente rigetto. Jack Bruce, influenzato da illustri storici contrabbassisti jazz come Charles Mingus, ha forgiato sin degli anni '60, con il gruppo-madre Cream (con Eric Clapton e Ginger Baker) il ruolo della quattro corde nel rock-blues, rivoluzionandone la funzione di mero accompagnamento che aveva avuto nella musica pop, e facendone uno strumento aggressivo, armonicamente stratificato, protagonista fondamentale nell'economia di un brano rock-blues, soprattutto nelle esibizioni live dei Cream, dove dialogava sullo stesso piano, con uguale creatività con la solista straripante di Eric Clapton ed i percussionismi funambolici di Ginger Baker.

Ma definirlo bassista tout-court sarebbe fare un grave torto alla sua memoria. Jack Bruce è stato decisamente un musicista a tutto tondo: eccezionale cantante pop e blues - oltre che armonicista (Four Until Late, Traintime) e pianista - sin dai lavori dei Cream, in possesso di una voce potente ed epica, che sapeva però piegarsi di volta in volta a spleen lirici, introspettivi, malinconici. Indimenticabili le sue vibranti interpretazioni vocali di brani seminali come N.S.U., I'm So Glad, Sunshine Of Your Love, We're Going Wrong, Dance the Night Away, White Room, Politician, Deserted Cities of the Heart. E' stato anche un grandissimo compositore di musica pop, coadiuvato per le liriche sempre dal fedele amico Pete Brown, dagli esordi dei Cream di I Feel Free (1966) sino ai brani dell'ultimo recente lavoro inciso in vita, "Silver Rails", uscito il 25 Marzo 2014 (alle chitarre Robin Trower, Phil Manzanera, Uli Jon Roth, Bernie Marsden). Uomo ed artista inossidabile quindi, creativo ed in attività sino alla fine, fieramente avverso alla malattia che l'ha consumato. Grandi opere sono i suoi primi album solisti, incisi tra la fine dei '60 e la prima metà dei '70: "Songs for a Tailor" (1969), "Harmony Row" (1971, il più ispirato, un capolavoro senza tempo!), "Out of the" Storm" (1974), stracolmi di gemme pop dal gusto compositivo raffinato, di classe davvero grandissima. 

Alcuni furono ripresi da altre band: Theme for an Imaginary Western dai Mountain e dai Colosseum, Rope Ladder to the Moon dai Colosseum. "Things We Like" (1970) invece, registrato con i vecchi amici della Graham Bond Organisation, John McLaughlin (guitar), Jon Hiseman (drums), e Dick Heckstall-Smith (sax), è album prettamente jazz, a testimonianza della versatilità di sempre di Bruce; che aveva suonato prima del varo dei Cream con tutti i padrini del british blues nei primi anni '60: Bond, John Mayall ed Alexis Korner, oltre che con i Manfred Mann. Impressionante è anche la lista di autorevoli protagonisti della storia del rock con cui ha collaborato dopo i Cream nel corso di quattro decadi, ed in band-sue reincarnazioni artistiche dal nome sempre diverso: Lou Reed (nell'album "Berlin"), Franz Zappa, West & Laing, Tony Williams Lifetime, Kip Hanrahan, Carla Bley, Mick Taylor, Robin Trower, Vernon Reid, John Medeski, Gary Moore, Billy Cobham, Joe Bonamassa. Molti i dischi live nella sua discografia; tra i migliori in studio invece (dopo quelli su nominati) "How's Tricks" (1977), "A Question of Time" (1990), “Somethin' Else" (1993), "Monkjack" (1995), "More Jack Than God" (2003), "Seven Moons" (2008, con Robin Trower). Jack Bruce è da annoverare tra gli artisti-musicisti più influenti e seminali del XX° e XXI° secolo, anche se la sua carriera, parallela in tutti questi anni a quella del suo comprimario nei Cream Eric Clapton, è sempre rimasta nelle cronache rispetto ad essa fatalmente ed ingiustamente in ombra.

JACK BRUCE: Class, Creativity, Eclecticism: 1943 - 2014  

The three  artistic qualities mentioned in the title of this Goodbye, largely sum the talent expressed by the 50 years long musical career of Jack Bruce. The world famous Scottish bassist of Cream, one of the most revolutionary rock bands of the XX° century, has left us on 25^th October  2014, after a long fight against liver disease. In 2003 he had already survived to a near fatal liver transplant rejection. As a young musician he was influenced by such illustrious Jazz double bass players like Charles Mingus and since the 60's , with the Cream (sided by Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker), he built a new role for the four-strings instrument in blues-rock music, freeing it from the mere function of  rythmical support, transforming it in an aggressive, harmonically stratified, starring instrument, on wich could be based almost any track structure. This can be heard especially during their epic live performances, when he easily dialogued, on the same level of intensity and creativity, with the overflowing guitar work of Clapton and the percussive funambolism of Baker.

However, to define him only a bass-player would be a great injustice to his Memory. He has been an all-around accomplished musician: a fantastic blues-rock singer, as well as an expert harp player (Four Until Late-Traintime) and a very good pianist and keyboardist. His voice was powerful and epic, and at the same time able to incline to more lyrical, introspective and gloomy spleens. How to forget his vocal interpretations of of basic tracks like N.S.U., I'm so Glad, Sunshine of Your Love, We're Going Wrong, Dance the Night Away, White Room, Politician, Desert Cities of the Earth. He has been a great pop composer too, mostly sided for the lyrics by his longtime friend, poet Pete Brown, from Cream's debut in '66 up to his last studio effort “Silver Rails”, published on 25^th March of this year ( with top guitarists like Robin Trower, Phil Manzanera, Uli Jon Roth, Bernie Marsden). Inoxidizable man and artist, active and creative till the end of his life, fiercely opposed to to his heavy disease. All his first solo works, recorded between the end of the '60s and the first half of '70s, are masterpieces: “Songs for a Tailor” (1969), “Harmony Row” (1971), the most inspired, a timeless opera and  “Out of the Storm” (1974), all full of high class pop gems, as the result of his refined compositional taste.

Some of these tracks were lately covered by other bands: Theme For an Imaginary Western (a true Classic) by Mountain and Colosseum which also arranged and recorded their version of Rope Ladder to the Moon. “Things We Like” (1970), instead, recorded with the old friends from Graham Bond Organisation, John Mc Laughlin, Dick Heckstall Smith and Jon Hiseman,  is a truly instrumental Jazz album, proves the versatility of Jack Bruce, who had played with all the “Bosses” of the British Blues Movement from early '60s, from Graham Bond to John Mayall and Alexis Korner with a brief  appearance with easy-pop group Manfred Mann. The list of his collaborations from Cream split through the last 45 years is simply astonishing: Lou Reed (in one of his best albums “Berlin“), Frank Zappa, West & Laing, Tony Williams Lifetime, Kip Hanrahan, Carla Bley, Mick Taylor, Robin Trower, Billy Cobham, Vernon Reid, John Medeski, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa to name a few. Beyond his countless live performances, many other good studio album followed: “How's Tricks” (1977), “A Question Of Time” (1989), “Somethin' Else” (1993), “MonkJack” (1995, with Bernie Worrell), “More Jack Than God” (2003), “Seven Moons” (2008, with Robin Trower). Jack Bruce is certainly to number among the most important and influential artist-musicians of the last two centuries, even if his career, compared, for instance, to the one  of his former bandmate Eric Clapton, is always reamained fatally and unfairly in the shade.
