Sixties Connection: Garage Beat '66 Like What, Me Worry?! – Chicks Are For Kids! – Feeling Zero …/ ENGLISH VERSION

2004 - Sundazed

I nuovi volumi 4-6-7 (il 5 misteriosamente manca!) si intitolano: "I'm in need!", "Speak of the devil ...",  "That's How It Will Be!". Il primo cd sottotitolato "Like What, Me Worry?!"

garage 4Today there are hundreds of music anthologies that deal with primal rock, in a few years have been unearthed large quantities of 45s lost in the dust of time or treasured by enthusiasts navigated. As the title suggests the period in question is that between the mid and late sixties, with particular attention paid to the year 1966, the heyday of the American garage rock. In 1964 the British Invasion Yardbirds, Them, Animals, Kinks, Beatles and Rolling Stones had infected the whole world and thus a myriad of young amateur teens formed their own band. Ironically, just the United States, that a few years earlier had invented the rock and roll, passed from masters to amateurs unconscious emulation of that phenomenon called the English Beat.

Of course, most Americans did not possess the technical skills and fine touch that typically British so the result was somewhat different, a myriad of college bands from all states of the union after strummed for months and months in the garage under the house's new music and the classics of English, so rude, free-range, wild, noisy bear the same attitude of street thugs, made their debut on vinyl. Soon the whole town was submerged under an avalanche of 45, some of these small groups were able to realize their dreams, fame, money, fun and girls, but many stopped to one or two individuals, others could not even post anything. This gave the garage a music genre that lasted for a short period since it was soon forgotten and eclipsed by the more well-known phenomenon hippy. Among the best experts in archeology Rock, Lenny Kaye and Greg Shaw were definitely the hardest to bring up in a musical reality so fascinating, exciting and seminal garage with their first collection called Nuggets (1973) and subsequent expansion 4-CD box set that remains the most comprehensive and representative anthology on the market, the bible of garage rock.

garage 6After this brilliant idea of the commercial consequences were obvious: hundreds of replies more or less interesting among them are distinguished Back From The Grave, Pebbles, Rubble with copious number of volumes attached, exorbitant prices, similar track listing and so on. Garage Beat '66 is one of the most recent compilation, debuted in 2004 on three CDs plus two out later in July 2005 under the U.S. Sundazed, a label specializing in reissues of the best sixties. These first three chapters reveal immediately at first hearing a great value, superb quality of the recordings and in respect of defects, the usual presence of songs already in previous collections. The first CD subtitled "Like What, Me Worry?" is a delightful mix of songs garage blues aggressive and beat-oriented songs with catchy choruses that this does not expire in chants of honeyed dated, but often times they taste sour and are still more crude and dirty glistening pop of English. In the same wavelength traveling the other two episodes, one called "Chicks Are For Kids" and other "Feeling Zero ..." with covers very well maintained and with accurate and complete details on these obscure American band.

These three volumes comprise a total of 60 songs, among the best I would mention the ambiguous and pressing "Sweetgina" (1966) of Things To Come, defined as the forerunners of Love and The Doors, even if in fact their attitude very reminiscent of the Stones more rough, the magnificent The Litter in Minneapolis with their Whatcha Gonna Do About It? (1967) one of the most evil and distorted garage punk group of all time, the rude and ill The Third Bardo in New York with the song Lose Your Mind (1967), the heady Spiders coming from Arizona with Do not Blow Your Mind  (1966) an essay of dirty fuzz sound to the Neanderthals, the garage-beat horror of Texas Neal Ford & The Fanatics with Shame On You  (1967), beat the wet melody evocative of the Byrds The Best Things with Chicks Are For Kids  (1967), the fierce and ugly soul of John Hammond with I Wish You Would (1966). The Remains, The Purple Underground, The Preachers, the Ugly Ducklings, the Sparkles, The Fe-Fi-Four Plus 2, Oliver and many others, are perhaps the toughest wing of this kind, but the list could go on.

garage 7An anthology therefore worthy of respect, good music for all lovers of the sixties and beyond, the great variety of styles, from quiet and melodic pop rock to the most savage and depraved. I want to finish the argument by recommending this collection to fans of the genre completists, since as I mentioned before, these fetishes musical cost a fortune and the songs are not all worthy of such expense (some could remain safely in the basement to do mold). For those who want to spend the money well and take home a quality product, the first Nuggets box is perfect, if we hunger for garage 60 has not yet subsided, I suggest some amount of Pebbles, Back From The Grave few complete records came to light during that period.
