Mat Sargent, compositore e bassista dei gloriosi punkers Chelsea e Sham 69, e per molte altre band di punk rock inglese, ci parla, durante il Rebellion Festival 2015 di Agosto a Blackpool (UK) del suo mastodontico progetto “Sex Drugs and HIV” ma anche della sua vita e della sua musica. In esclusiva per Distorsioni.

L'INTERVISTA

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - Quando ha iniziato a suonare? Perchè ha scelto di fare il musicista?

Mat Sargent - A11 anni ho iniziato a suonare il violoncello, strumento che ho suonato per 4 anni prima di passare al contrabbasso che ho suonato invece per un anno soltanto. Ho avuto il primo basso verso i 14 anni, era una progressione naturale.

La sua carriera è davvero notevole e sono molte le canzoni scritte da lei che sono diventate famose. Qual'è la sua preferita?

Ce ne sono parecchie! (dice aprendosi in un grande sorriso). More Than A Giro con i Chelsea che fu la mia prima incisione. Show Time/15 Minutes, tratta dal secondo album MSsdh con gli Sham 69, mi riporta ad un periodo molto divertente, 70's Girl con Honest John. Ho dei bei ricordi di quel periodo, fu registrata in Francia tra tanto vino rosso e formaggio! Anche I Don't Know. E' tratta dal primo album con gli Splodge, fu tutta una risata! La registrai con Dave Goodman, il produttore dei Sex Pistols che mi ha aiutato anche nella realizzazione di Sex Drugs and Hiv.

Qual è la canzone di un altro musicista che avrebbe voluto scrivere?

Credo White Christmas di Bing Crosby ... ha venduto oltre 25 milioni di copie. Se l'avessi scritta io non avrei più avuto il pensiero di come pagare la bolletta del gas! (dice ridendo)

Ascolta musica nel tempo libero? Se sì, quale?

Per me la musica è come un peto... mi piace solamente l'odore del mio! (dice ironicamente ridendo). Ascolto di tutto: UK Subs, Led Zeppelin, Ozric Tentacles, Generation X, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, The Beat, Blue Oyster Cult, The Ruts.

Chi è o è stato la principale ispirazione per la sua musica?

Quando ero più giovane ascoltavo i Police e certamente Sting è stato una grande fonte di ispirazione. Negli anni Ottanta Sting ha suonato in alcuni concerti come ospite per i Chelsea e quando ci sono rientrato. Mi piace tanto anche Phil Lynott & Thin Lizzy, un grande autore e musicista! Io suono un Fender Precision nero con il battipenna a specchio simile a quello di Phil Lynott.

Che cosa prova per i Chelsea?

I Chelsea sono una grande band, hanno belle canzoni e abbiamo messo su proprio un bello spettacolo. Gene è uno dei migliori frontmen coi quali abbia mai lavorato e Nic Austin è un amico fidato. Ho suonato coi Chelsea dal 1991 al 1994 realizzando l'album "The Alternative & Traitors Gate", fu un grande tour e un periodo molto divertente. Sono tornato nei Chelsea nel 2011 dopo aver suonato per 12 anni negli Sham 69 e abbiamo registrato il nuovo album dal titolo "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" che sta avendo delle ottime recensioni.

Cosa pensa del punk oggi? Crede che ci sia differenza col punk '77? Se sì, quale la più evidente?

Penso che il punk oggi goda di ottima salute! Chiaramente non è come il Punk '77, anche perchè già tutto ciò che si faceva nel 1978 veniva classificato come Post Punk! Inoltre, se prima era un qualcosa realizzato a livello di strada che si diffondeva di bocca in bocca, con riviste di settore, poster, eccetera, adesso si diffonde attraverso i nuovi media e i social come Facebook e Twitter.

Pensando al suo passato, cosa definirebbe un errore? E cosa una vittoria?

Non penso di aver commesso degli errori sebbene probabilmente ne ho fatti parecchi. Penso comunque che ogni cosa nella vita costituisca un'esperienza dalla quale traiamo modo per evolvere come persone. Non penso neanche di aver realizzato delle vere e proprie vittorie, mi sento fortunato di aver realizzato abbastanza. Faccio quel che faccio e mi auguro di vivere una vita in salute e felicità!

Che cosa consiglierebbe ad un giovane musicista?

Sii te stesso, fa in modo che ti realizzi e non lasciare agli altri che cosa non sai fare.... perchè probabilmente lo sai fare!

L'album "Sex Drugs and HIV" è mastodontico. Quando lo ha progettato?

Avevo appena terminato un massacrante tour di 50 date in Europa e Gran Bretagna con i Chelsea con l'album Traitors Gate nel 1994 e mi sentivo esausto. Un paio di anni prima mi era stato diagnosticato l'HIV. Mi avevano dato da 3 a 5 anni di vita e compresi a quel punto che non mi rimaneva molto tempo. Mio figlio aveva 4 anni a quel tempo e non pensavo che l'avrei potuto veder crescere, e per questo decisi di registrare un album usando i miei inediti tra testi, musiche e linee di basso. Abbandonai per questo progetto i Chelsea.

L'album Sex Drugs and HIV è una specie di testamento come musicista. Qual'è il messaggio che vorrebbe lasciare alla generazione futura come musicista e quale come padre?

L'album Sex Drugs & HIV è stato un grande progetto al quale lavorare, durante gli anni ogni volta che mi sono ammalato ho pensato che fosse il mio " Canto del cigno". Mi vennero prospettati pochi anni di vita nel 1989 quando contrassi l'HIV ed poi il cancro nel 2007 ma sono sopravvissuto e non mollo.

I miei figli sono cresciuti mentre realizzavo l'album, assistendo alle registrazioni, ascoltando le tracce e sono consci del motivo per cui sto realizzando l'album. Mia figlia è nata pochi mesi dopo la prima registrazione del 1996 e quindi lei ha stessa età dell'album e suona le percussioni in una delle tracce! Mio figlio ha invece filmato l'ultima registrazione dell'album, filmato che sarà inserito nei documentari che sto realizzando.

Crede in Dio?

Sì, ma non non lo immagino come un vecchio bislacco con una lunga barba bianca come Babbo Natale. Credo che Dio sia un'energia, come l'elettricità, e credo che quando moriamo le energie di ciascuno di noi si riuniscano per fare un'unica grande forza energetica.

L'album prende spunto dalla sua vita personale e dalla sua esperienza. Ha scritto tutte le 40 canzoni da solo?

Ho scritto la maggior parte delle canzoni, alcune sono delle riattualizzazioni di mie tracce scritte quando ero un adolescente, altre sono state scritte in studio ex novo.

Ad alcuni brani ho collaborato con alcuni musicisti che volevano scrivere dei testi propri, tra gli altri: Paul Fenech (The Meteors), Micky Fitz (The Business), Frankie Stubbs (Leatherface), Roly Wynne (Ozric Tentacles), Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Chris Bowsher (RDF), Darren White (The Blood Divine), Lee Thompson (Madness), Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy), Judge Dread, Mark E Smith (The Fall), Dick Lukas (Subhumans), Afrika Bambaataa, Angie Bowie, Jimmy Pursey (Sham 69) and Jennie (Belle Stars).

Mat Abbey Road 1 Non volevo scrivere la traccia dal titolo Sex Drugs and HIV e per questo ho chiesto a Darrell Bath & Honest John Plain di scriverla. Splodgenessabounds ha donato la traccia 667 The Neighbor of The Beast che era una collaborazione Splodge/Girlschool.

L'album è stato realizzato in 19 anni. Come è cambiato dall'idea iniziale?

Inizialmente l'album avrebbe dovuto contenere soltanto 14 brani. Conoscevo già la maggior parte dei musicisti, molti erano vecchi amici o persone che avevo incontrato durante il mio cammino ma più si sapeva dell'album, più aumentavano i musicisti che volevano prenderne parte. Ed è così che è diventato un doppio con venti tracce in ciascuno album.

Che mi dice della partecipazione di Tony Hadley degli Spandau Ballet?

Tony Hadley ci ha lavorato tantissimo ed è un gran personaggio! Tony è stato contento di lavorarci e ha cantato meravigliosamente per Be Gentle di cui ha riscritto anche la seconda strofa. Gli sono grato di aver scritto qualcosa per il progetto e che gli sia venuto spontaneo.

Nel titolo dell'album è contenuta la parola Sex, ma lei cosa pensa dell'amore?

Amo l'amore! (dice ridendo) Il concetto di Sesso, Droga e HIV è legato alle associazioni che beneficeranno dei proventi dell'album, così alla voce Sesso è associato Rape Crisis (si occupa di sostegno ai casi di stupro), alla Droga, Release e all'HIV la Terrence Higgins Trust. Ho anche aggiunto la Cancer Research (Ricerca sul cancro) alla lista dei beneficiari perchè mi è stato diagnosticato il cancro nel 2007, ma anche perchè alcuni musicisti che hanno preso parte alla realizzazione dell'album sono già morti di cancro: Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Paul Fox (The Ruts), Kelly Johnson (Girlschool), Jez Bird (The Lambrettas), Chris Townson (Jet/Radio Stars), Paul Samson (Samson). Sono partito dal motto Sesso, Droga e Rock 'n Roll. La band del progetto sull'HIV che suona le canzoni dell'album si chiama 'Rock n Roll Gypsies' ed ecco che abbiamo la quadratura del cerchio mettendoci anche il rock n roll !!

Che cosa ti aspetti dal tuo progetto Sex Drugs and HIV?

Vorrei che avesse un buon riscontro, è un bellissimo progetto realizzato con così tanti validi musicisti. Ho appena finito la realizzazione dei documentari, 28 in tutto. Ogni documentario dura un'ora e mostra i musicisti al lavoro ai loro brani realizzati per l'album.

È una sorta di archivio o documentazione storica sui musicisti che copre 5 decadi, alcuni dei quali non sono più con noi. L'album supporta 4 importanti fondazioni e tutti i proventi raccolti andranno a loro: Rape Crisis, Release, Terrence Higgins Trust and Cancer Research.

Riguardo al futuro, che cosa sta ancora pianificando?

Ho diversi progetti per il mio futuro che mi piacerebbe realizzare, vorrei realizzare un paio di film. Ho realizzato una pellicola del tour che ho fatto con gli Splodge e gli Honest John, vorrei anche realizzare 2 film dei tour con i Chelsea. Sto anche scrivendo la mia autobiografia che vorrei trasformare in un libro di ricordi e diari. Sto anche discutendo di un nuovo album con i Chelsea e di uno con gli Slodge.

INTERVIEW WITH MAT SARGENT

Mat Sargent, composer and bass player for Chelsea and Sham 69 and for many other english punk rock bands, during Rebellion Festival 2015 talks to us about his huge project Sex, Drugs and Hiv and also about his life and music.

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - When did you play first? Why did u choose to be a player?
Matt Sargent- I started playing cello at school when I was 11, I did that for 4 years before playing double bass for a year. I got my first bass guitar when I was 14 so it was a natural progression from playing cello & double bass.

Your career is very impressive and you write lots famous songs. What is your favorite one?
I have a few ( smiling)
Chelsea - More Than A Giro. It was the first song I recorded that was officially released.
Sham 69 - Show Time/15 Minutes. From the 2nd album I did with Sham, funny times.
Honest John - 70's Girl.Great memories from that period, recorded in France (lots of red wine & cheese).

Splodge - I Don't Know. From the 1st album I did with Splodge, it was a laugh ! and it was recorded with Dave Goodman the Sex Pistols producer who also helped me with the Sex Drugs n HIV album.

What is the song of another player you wanted to write ?
Maybe White Christmas by Bing Crosby ... it sold over 25 million copies. I wouldn't have to worry about paying the gas bill if i'd of written it (laughs).

Are you listening to music in your free time? If yes, what?
Music is very much like a fart to me... I like the smell of my own ! (laughs)
I like all sorts of stuff UK Subs, Led Zeppelin, Ozric Tentacles, Generation X, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, The Beat, Blue Oyster Cult. The Ruts.

Who is or was the main inspiration for your music?
I listened to The Police when I was younger so Sting has to be a big inspiration. Sting also guested with Chelsea for a few shows in the 80's which swung it for me when I joined.
I also love Phil Lynott & Thin Lizzy, great song writer & performer ! I play a black Fender Precision with mirror pick guard similar to Phil Lynott's.

What's your feeling about Chelsea?
Chelsea are a great band, great songs and we really do put on a show. Gene is one of the best front-men I have worked with and Nic Austin is a close buddy. I played in Chelsea 1991 - 1994 recording The Alternative & Traitors Gate albums, great tours & fun times. I rejoined Chelsea in 2011 after 12 years in Sham 69 and we recorded a new Chelsea album 'Saturday Night Sunday Morning' which has been getting great reviews.

What do u think about punk today? Do you think is different from punk 77? If yes, what's the main difference?
I think punk today is healthy and it's good! Of course it's not like it was in 1977 and even then anything 1978 onwards was classed as post-punk. Back then it was a street level thing done on the word of mouth, fanzines, posters, etc, now it's media sites like Facebook & Twitter.

Thinking about your past, what do you think of as a mistake? and as a goal?
I can't think of any mistakes although I probably made a few. I think everything in life is an experience which we learn from as we evolve as people. I don't know about goals really, i'm lucky that I've achieved so much already. I just do what I do and hope to live a healthy & happy life.

What do you suggest to a young musician?
Be yourself, keep it real and don't let people tell you what you can't do... coz you probably can!

The "Sex and Drugs and HIV" album is a big project. When did you plan it ?

I had just finished a massive 50 date UK and European tour in 1994 with Chelsea for the Traitors Gate album.I had been diagnosed with HIV a couple of years previously. I'd been given 3 - 5 years to live so I thought I didn't have very long left .My son was 4 at the time and after my diagnosis I didn't think I’d see him grow up so I decided to record an album using up all my unused songs, riffs and lyrics, so I leaved Chelsea.

"The Sex Drugs and HIV" album is a sort of music legacy as a musician. What is the message you want to leave to the next generation and as a father?

"The Sex Drugs & HIV" album has been a great project to work on, a few times over the years when I became ill I thought it was to be my Swan song. I was given a few years to live in 1989 when I contracted HIV and also cancer in 2007 but I survived and didn't give up. My children have grown up around the album, coming to recording sessions with me, listening to the tracks as they developed so they are very aware of the reasons why I put the album together. My daughter was born a few months after the original recording sessions in 1996 so she is as old as the album and plays percussion on one of the tracks. My son also filmed the last recording sessions of the album which were made into documentaries.

Do you believe in God?
Yes, although I don't believe he's a big geezer with a big white beard like Father Christmas. I think of God as an energy like electricity and when we die, all our energies join together to make one big energy force.

The album gets ideas from your personal life and experience but there are many musician (over 200!) contributing in. Did you write all 40 songs yourself?

I wrote most of the songs, some of which were revamped tracks I’d written when I was a teenager and some were written in the studio. I collaborated with musicians on some of the tracks as they wanted to write their own lyrics etc including; Paul Fenech (The Meteors), Micky Fitz (The Business), Frankie Stubbs (Leatherface), Roly Wynne (Ozric Tentacles), Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Chris Bowsher (RDF), Darren White (The Blood Divine), Lee Thompson (Madness), Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy), Judge Dread, Mark E Smith (The Fall), Dick Lukas (Subhumans), Afrika Bambaataa, Angie Bowie, Jimmy Pursey (Sham 69) and Jennie Belle Stars).

I didn't want to write the title track Sex Drugs and HIV so I asked Darrell Bath & Honest John Plain to write it. Splodgenessabounds donated a track 667 The Neighbor of The Beast which was a Splodge / Girlschool collaboration.

The album takes about 19 years, how did it change from the first idea?

The album was originally going to be one album of around 14 songs. I knew most of the musicians already, many of them were old friends or people I’d met on the road but as more people heard about the album other musicians wanted to get involved. The album grew to a double album with 20 tracks on each album.

What about Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley contribution ?

Tony Hadley was great to work with and a nice geezer!Tony was a pleasure to work with and he did a great vocal on 'Be Gentle on wich he rewrote the 2nd verse. I was pleased he'd written something for the project and he was easy to work with.

The title of album mentions sex. What do you thing about love?
I love love !!(laughs). The concept of Sex Drugs n HIV was; Sex - Rape Crisis
Drugs - Release (drugs charity) HIV - Terrence Higgins Trust (AIDS & HIV charity)
I also added Cancer Research to the list of beneficiary charities as I was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, also a few of the musicians on the album have since died of cancer; Poly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Paul Fox (The Ruts), Kelly Johnson (Girlschool), Jez Bird (The Lambrettas), Chris Townson (Jet / Radio Stars), Paul Samson (Samson).
From the motto- sex, drugs and rock n roll. The HIV project band play songs from the album and is called the 'Rock n Roll Gypsies' so there's the rock n roll!!

What are u expecting from your project Sex Drugs and HIV?
I would like the Sex Drugs & HIV album to do well, it's been such an awesome project to do with so many brilliant musicians. I have just finished editing the documentaries, 28 in all. Each documentary is an hour long showing all the musicians at work on their tracks. It's like an archive or historical document of musicians from an era spanning 5 decades, some of them are sadly no longer with us.The album supports 4 main charities and all the money made will go to; Rape Crisis, Release, Terrence Higgins Trust and Cancer Research.

About the future, what are you planning in your career?
I have a few projects I would like to do, I plan to make a couple of films. I have video footage from the tours I did with Splodge and Honest John, I also have 2 Chelsea tour films I'd like to make. I am also writing my autobiography which I'd like to turn into a book from my memoirs & diaries. Chelsea are already talking about a new album and the same with Splodge.
