Pins “Ragazze come noi” – Italian/English version

Ogni promessa è debito: le mancuniane Pins sono state di parola mantenendo quella che ci avevano fatto il 14 Maggio scorso dopo il loro concerto (insieme a The Nostalgics) al Lo-Fi di Milano. La chitarrista Lois McDonald e la cantante Faith Holgate ce l'hanno rilasciata per e-mail. Buona lettura.

 

 

 L'INTERVISTA

 

Ubaldo Tarantino (Distorsioni) - Ciao,  giusto per cominciare con un paio di domande banali, potete raccontarci come avete iniziato e da cosa deriva il vostro nome?

Faith Holgate (Pins)  –  Io ho formato la band, non ci conoscevamo tra di noi prima di metterci a suonare insieme, ci siamo incontrate tramite amici di amici mentre il nome PINS doveva essere una cosa temporanea ma che poi è semplicemente rimasto, è cool, mi piace.

 

Potete raccontarci della vostra etichetta, la Haus of PINS? Quando la avete varata e come è nata l'idea?

Faith – Inizialmente lo abbiamo fatto per poter realizzare la nostra musica, il nostro primo singolo era autoprodotto…le cassette andarono esaurite il primo giorno della messa in vendita e poi siamo state contattate dalla Bella Union. L’autoproduzione è stato un buon trampolino di lancio da cui iniziare così abbiamo pensato “Al diavolo, perché non produrre altre bands e vediamo come va?” e finora è un bel viaggio.

Lois McDonald (Pins) -  Volevamo produrci da sole dato che avevamo appena iniziato e non eravamo sicure di voler lavorare con un’altra etichetta in quella fase. Come tutte le cose che facciamo, lo abbiamo progettato realizzandoci noi la cassetta, le copertine, facendo il laser cutting e confezionandoli a mano noi stesse. La prima uscita è stata Shoot you  e  Eleventh hour che abbiamo stampato in vinile a forma di cuore per il Record Store Day 2014.

 

Se doveste realizzare il comunicato stampa per “Girls Like Us”, come lo descrivereste?

Faith – Questa è una cosa buffa perchè in effetti abbiamo dato una mano nel realizzarlo, aiutiamo sempre nello scrivere tutti i comunicati stampa relativi alle nostre uscite. E’ sempre difficile mettere la musica in poche parole ma, come sai... dicendo cupo, dark, pop etc etc in realtà non dici nulla.

Lois – Per me, una delle cose interessanti al riguardo è il fatto che lo abbiamo registrato e mixato in una settimana. Penso sia davvero rappresentativo di come lavoravamo in quel periodo, è stato divertente e davvero eccitante e spero che quell’energia fuoriesca dal nostro disco. Probabilmente lo metterei tra virgolette.

 

Sembra che anche I testi abbiano una parte importante del vostro modo di essere, é così? I vostri testi nascono come espressione di rabbia, vulnerabilità oppure un mix di entrambe?

Faith – Non mi sento arrabbiata o vulnerabile…i testi nascono più da un processo di riflessione controllata, come un riassunto di qualsiasi cosa io abbia pensato, non scrivo quando sono triste o mi sento impazzire, scrivo sempre quando sono in un stato neutro, abitualmente quando sono nel mio letto.

Lois – Nelle rare occasioni in cui scrivo I testi, solitamente è perché c’è qualcosa che ho bisogno di tirar fuori dalla mia testa  e a cui non riesco a dare un senso. Per me queste cose sono più frutto della frustrazione dovuta ad una situazione, mentre quando sono felice cerco solo di godermi il feeling che sto provando.

 

Personalmente, una grande band è quella che non suona come l’imitazione di una band del passato o del presente quanto piuttosto è capace  di prendere le proprie influenze e creare qualcosa che possa suonare in qualche modo familiare ma comunque fresco ed innovativo. La vostra band lo fa in un modo che non ho sentito da altre bands negli ultimi cinque anni. Da quali formazioni sentite sia arrivata una ispirazione negli anni, che hanno portato alla vostra formazione musicale?

Faith – Proprio poco prima di registrare ero ossessionata da Thee Oh Sees e Black Lips.

Lois – Io ascoltavo molto punk, ma non mi piace sentirmi limitata in una scena e di solito, a quel tempo, avevo poche bands che amavo ed ascoltavo in continuazione a seconda del mio umore. Ho ascoltato così tanta musica prima di entrare nel gruppo e credo che anche ciò che ascolto sia cambiato molto nel tempo. E’ davvero difficile scegliere da dove iniziare, ma i gruppi che sto ascoltando molto al momento sono Black Lips, Fat White Family, September Girls, Shannon and the Clams.

 

Parlando dei gusti attuali, ci dite cosa ascoltate al momento e se c’è qualcosa che volete suggerirci per futuri ascolti? 

Faith – Siamo tutte grandi fans di Brown Brogues, Eternal Summers, Kult Country, Paws, September Girls, Abjects.

Lois – Quelli che ti dicevo prima e ci metterei qualcun’altro come Money, Hookworms, Bernard and Edith.

 

Una delle cose che mi piacciono del vostro gruppo è che ogni membro della band  dà un contributo ritmico o melodico davvero avvincente. Qual'è, in generale, il vostro processo compositivo? Iniziate di solito con una melodia di chitarra, o vocale, con un pattern di batteria e poi componete I testi?

Lois – Dipende: a volte Faith o io componiamo una canzone a casa e la portiamo nel gruppo, a volte, semplicemente, iniziamo a suonare e vediamo dove ci porta. Scriviamo un sacco e ci sbarazziamo di un sacco di roba, teniamo solo le canzoni che ci divertiamo a suonare. 

   

I video di Stay True and Say To Me sono fantastici e anche LUVU4LYF  è molto bello. Mi piace molto anche il feeling visivo del bianco e nero  in The last Shoot you/Eleventh hour, è davvero bello! Tutti i video sembrano avere la stessa forza ed identità delle canzoni. Sono due facce della stessa moneta che si supportano l’un l’altra oppure è sempre la musica al centro delle emozioni?  Fino a che punto siete state coinvolte nella realizzazione/ideazione dei vostri video?

Lois –  Siamo generalmente molto coinvolte con i video, il nostro amico Sing J Lee ne ha anche diretti alcuni. Scrivere la musica è una parte molto distinta dai video, ma di solito quando otteniamo una canzone che suona come vogliamo siamo felici di iniziare a immaginare le immagini che possano sposarsi in maniera veramente naturale.

 

Siete appena tornate dal vostro primo, breve tour Italiano. Come è stato?

Faith – Incredibile, bella gente, bei posti dove abbiamo suonato e ottimo vino!  

Lois – Abbiamo bevuto per la prima volta del vino rosso frizzante!

 

Sempre parlando dello stare in tour, ci potete raccontare un aneddoto, qualcosa di divertente che vi è accaduto in questo periodo fino ad ora?  

Lois – Tutto ciò che ci accade è ridicolo. Passiamo un sacco di tempo a ridere, altrimenti ci sarebbe da piangere.

 

 

INTERVIEW with PINS

 

Ubaldo Tarantino (Distorsioni) - Ciao, Just starting with very trivial questions, could you tell us how you started? Where is your name coming from?

Faith Holgate (Pins) - I put the band together, we didn’t know each other prior to playing music together, we met through friends of friends.. the name PINS was meant to be a temporary thing but it just stuck, it’s cool though, I like it.

 

Could you tell us about your label, Haus Of PINS? When you started it and why  you thought to create it?

Faith  - Inititally it was so that we could release our own music, our first single was self released.. the cassettes sold out on the first day that we out them on sale and then we got signed to Bella Union, self releasing was a good stepping stone for us so we just thought fuck it why not  release some other bands and see how it goes, so far it’s been a trip.

Lois McDonald (Pins) - We wanted to release it ourselves as we had just started out and weren’t sure we wanted to work with another label at that stage.  Like everything, we made it into a project – designing the tape and covers, laser cutting and hand making them ourselves.  The first release was was shoot you and eleventh hour which we rerecorded and pressed to heart shaped vinyl for Record store Day 2014.

 

If you had to write your own press release for “Girls Like Us”, how would you describe it?

Faith – That’s funny ‘cos we did help write it, we always help write all of our press releases.. it’s always difficult to put music into a few words. But, you know.. saying brooding, dark, pop etc etc etc doesn’t really mean anything.

Lois – for me one of the interesting things about it is that we recorded and mixed it in a week.  I think it’s really representative of how we were working at the time, it was fun, and really exciting and I hope that energy comes through on the record. I'd probably just put that in quotation marks.

 

It seems that even lyrics have an important part in your way to be so, lyrically, are your words created out of anger, vulnerability, or a mix of both?

Faith – I don’t feel angry or vulnerable.. the lyrics are more of a controlled thought process , like a summary of whatever I’ve been thinking about, I don’t write them when I’m sad or feeling crazy, they’re always written when I’m in a neutral state.. usually from my bed.

 Lois – on the rare occasions I write lyrics, it’s usually because there’s something I need to get out of my head that I can’t make sense of.. for me those things are more likely to be born of frustration of a situation.  When I’m happy, I’m just enjoy feeling happy.

 

For me, a great band is one that doesn’t sound like their absolutely mimicking another band from the past or present. Instead they are able to take their influences and create something that sounds somewhat familiar, but still fresh and innovative. PINS does this more than any band I’ve heard in the last five year. What bands do you feel inspired you in the years leading up to your formation?

Faith – Directly before recording I was obsessed with Thee Oh Sees and the Black Lips

 Lois – For me it was mostly punk that I’d be listening too, but I don’t like to feel limited to one scene and usually just have a few bands at a time that I really love and listen to over and over again, depending on my mood.  I listen to so much more music since I joined the band, and I think what I listen to has probably changed a lot too, it’s hard to know where to start really, but bands I’m listening to a lot at the moment are Black Lips, Fat White Family, September Girls, and Shannon and the Clams.

  

Talking about present tastes, could tell us what you currently listening to and if is there anything you want to suggest us for future listening?

Faith – we’re all big fans of  Brown brogues, Eternal Summers, Kult Country, Paws, Septemeber Girls, Abjects

Lois – See above!  I’ll throw a few more in though, MONEY, Hookworms, and Bernard and Edith.

 

One of the things that I like about PINS is that each member makes a melodic or rhythmic contribution that’s compelling. What’s the general process for writing songs, inside the band? Do you generally start with a guitar melody, vocal melody, drum pattern, etc and then compose lyrics on it?

Lois – It depends.  Sometimes Faith or I will do a song at home and bring it to the band and sometimes we just start playing and see where it takes us.  We write a lot and get rid of a lot too, we just keep the songs we enjoy playing.

 

The videos for Stay True and Say To Me are wonderful and LUVU4LYF  is good too and I really like the B&W visual feeling  in the last Shoot you/Eleventh hour, it’ s really great. All of them seem  to have almost as strong an identity as the songs,  are they two sides  of the same coin, equally supporting each other, or is  music always  at the top of the feeling?. To what extent did you get involved in the vision/concept for your videos?

Lois – We are usually really involved with the videos, our friends Sing J Lee has directed a few too.  Writing the music is a very separate part of it, but usually when we get a song sounding how we want and we’re happy we start imagining the visuals that would go with it really naturally.

 

I know you’re just back from your first short Italian tour, how it was?

Faith – Incredible, good people, good venues, good wine!

Lois – We had sparkling red wine for the first time

 

Always talking about touring, could you tell us an anecdote about something funny that happened you during this time up so far?

Lois – everything that happens to us is ridiculous.  We spend a lot of time laughing, because otherwise we’d be crying.
