TV Smith Orgogliosamente punk! – Italian/English version

Incontriamo TV Smith, una leggenda del punk ‘77 e del rock inglese in generale, al di fuori della monumentale Winter Gardens di Blackpool, presso la quale si svolge il Rebellion Festival 2015, il più importante festival punk a livello mondiale. Il suo "Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts" (1978) inciso con l'omonima band fa parte della storia del punk.

Ci accomodiamo in un caffè sito nella piazza antistante la venue, il Number Five che sarà la nostra sede operativa per le interviste. Dinanzi ad un Americano con latte parte la nostra intervista.  

 

 

 

L'INTERVISTA   

 

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - Lei ha una lunga e riconosciuta carriera. Quando potremmo dire che è iniziata?

TV Smith - Suonare è per me uno stile di vita. Suono da quando ero un bambino, dai tempi della scuola, ho iniziato verso i 15/16 anni. Ben prima di suonare con gli Adverts suonavo a scuola con gli amici, e dopo circa tre anni fondavo una glam punk band e suonavamo del pop anni '50 ma solo con gli Adverts ho iniziato a suonare la musica che mi piaceva.   

 

Alessio Mazzocchi (Distorsioni) - Quanti album ha inciso?

Ne ho incisi molti, non ricordo il numero esatto, sinceramente non me ne curo, ma credo 15 o 20.  

 

F.C. - C'è un disco al quale è particolarmente affezionato?

Quando si scrivono canzoni dire quale sia la preferita è come chiedere ad una madre di scegliere il proprio figlio prediletto, una distinzione impossibile. Posso solo dire che mi piace capire ciò che la gente vuole ascoltare e cosa la diverta. E' interessante vedere che non si spaventi con Lion and the Lamb, una ballad che tutti conoscono ovunque io vada. Non è una canzone prettamente punk ma un pezzo molto lento e coinvolgente. Amo vedere che il pubblico punk ne sia interessato.  

 

 

A.M. - La sua musica potrebbe essere definita 'punk melodico'? Perchè preferisce esprimersi e suonare in questo modo?

Sì, il mio è un punk melodico. Mi preoccupo solo di ciò che una canzone riesca ad esprimere e se è una buona canzone, questo è l'unico motivo. Io  scrivo canzoni e non mi domando se una canzone sia punk o se non lo sia o se  possa essere qualsiasi altra cosa, bensì se possa essere una buona canzone. Per avere una buona canzone è necessario avere un buon testo, una buona melodia, una buona armonia. Per chi suona questa è la regola. Non importa altro.  

 

A.M. - Si sente punk?

Si. Sono cresciuto con l'old punk rock  attraverso la mia band (Adverts) e attraverso ciò che abbiamo prodotto. Penso che essere punk voglia dire stare bene al mondo facendo onestamente del proprio meglio, trovando sempre il modo per essere indipendenti e per esprimere se stessi pienamente. Io l'ho sempre fatto. E questo vale in qualsiasi modo ci si esprima, attraverso la musica, la pittura o attraverso qualsiasi altra arte, sia in maniera melodica che aggressiva o in qualsiasi altra maniera. Questo è essere punk! 

 

A.M. - Cosa pensa del Rebellion Festival?Grandioso! E' molto bello vedere stare insieme migliaia e migliaia di persone in modo mai aggressivo, estremamente amichevole, felice, tutti uniti come in una grande famiglia in pace.  

 

F.C. - Durante il Rebellion Festival non ci sono stati disordini nè per la strada nè all'interno della venue e abbiamo notato l'assenza delle forze di polizia. Al contrario abbiamo visto tanta polizia davanti alle discoteche del lungomare. Cosa pensa di questo?

Discoteche... ecco dov'è il problema! I punk si impegnano per dare dei valori a ciò che fanno e li cercano nella musica che ascoltano. Le nuove generazioni che crescono ascoltando questa musica da discoteca, musica spazzatura sostanzialmente, non riescono ad esprimersi se prima non sono completamente ubriachi e questo perchè devono riempire dei vuoti che lascia la musica stessa, una musica senza contenuti. Sei costretto a ubriacarti! (dice ridendo). Non ha contenuti e le persone sono molto tristi. Devono ubriacarsi per forza (dice ironicamente)! Chi ascolta la musica punk riflette sul significato ed i valori della vita.  

 

F.C. -  Ha girato in Europa e nel mondo, suonando sia con gli Adverts  e altri gruppi ma anche da solista, quale posto nel mondo sente come casa da un punto di vista artistico?

Io vivo in Gran Bretagna ma ho un legame forte con la Germania. Lì ho cominciato la mia carriera da solista, in questo paese che per primo mi ha compreso e favorito, così quando non succedeva alcunchè in Gran Bretagna lì ho iniziato a suonare. Ci sono tanti clubs in Germania e mi hanno accolto sin dall'inizio e col tempo ho appreso anche il Tedesco, "Ja, Ich spreche Deutsch!". Di recente ho trascorso un paio di settimane in Germania ma devo dire che mi trovo a mio agio ovunque e ho amici in tutto il mondo. Vivo comunque in Gran Bretagna, di cui amo tutto: paese divertente, gente meravigliosa, grandiosa atmosfera... Quando si viaggia molto si incontra bene o male la stessa gente, sia le brave persone che gli idioti (dice ridendo)!

 

F.C - E' impressionante notare che lei abbia in programma di suonare 4 giorni su 4 (3 sul palco e 1 sul tram) al Rebellion, non è stanco, soprattutto alla sua età?

Ho suonato ogni maledetto giorno! Non sono stanco, questo è ciò che voglio fare! Mi stanca viaggiare in giro per il mondo per spostarmi da un palco ad un altro, mentre invece dall'esibizione che faccio traggo energia, mi ricarica le batterie.    

 

A.M. - Nella fase compositiva delle sue ballads cosa nasce per prima ? La musica o le parole?

Nascono insieme generalmente anche se in alcuni casi viene prima la musica e poi le parole, altre volte prima le parole e poi la musica, altre volte ancora ci vuole tanto tempo prima che da un'idea si riesca a comporre musica e parole. Non c'è una vera e propria strada segnata. Ogni brano ha la propria storia.  

 

A.M. - Di cosa parlano i testi delle sue canzoni?

Parlano di tutto. Un mix di vissuto personale, società e politica. Parlano della vita, della mia vita, di tutto. Non ho un argomento specifico ma suono e scrivo di ciò che avviene nella mia vita.  

 

 

F.C. - Che cosa suggerirebbe ad una band nuova che vuole emergere?

Emergere ha preso un sacco di tempo anche a me! La prima cosa: semplicemente fare. Credere in se stessi e fare ciò che si vuol fare. E credere che ciò che si fa è la cosa giusta. Solo quando si fa ciò che si desidera fare si hanno delle basi solide. È difficile emergere, questo è certo. Ma non bisogna farsi scoraggiare e non cedere a compromessi. Non bisogna lasciare che siano gli altri a dirci ciò che si dovrebbe fare; non bisogna lasciarsi abbattere se qualcuno dice che un suono o una melodia non vanno bene. Non bisogna cedere alle critiche ma andare avanti e qualsiasi cosa succeda, persino quando qualcuno dice che il nostro lavoro è spazzatura, bisogna ascoltare il proprio cuore e crederci fino in fondo. Solo questa è la cosa giusta da fare, crederci.  

 

F.C. - Crede in Dio?

No. Sto aspettando la prova! Credo nella gente e credo che la gente debba credere in se stessa. Credo in ciò che posso toccare, in ciò che vedo attorno a me, e già questo è Dio: la vita, le persone. Bisogna guardare innanzitutto a sè e non preoccuparsi di Dio. 

 

F.C. - Come la sua famiglia ha accolto la sua decisione di intraprendere una carriera musicale?

La mia famiglia era felice di sapere che riuscissi nel fare ciò che desideravo. Quando gli Adverts in sei mesi dal loro esordio ebbero i loro brani nelle hits fu bellissimo e i dubbi sparirono immediatamente da parte dei miei genitori. E riguardo all' "orribile punk rock" dissero che se questo era il meglio che sapevo fare, che continuassi pure a farlo! 

 

A.M. -  Quali sono le sue band preferite?

È difficile dire quale sia la preferita. Non so rispondere a questa domanda.  

 

A.M. -    Ascolta musica?

Non ascolto molta musica perchè sono impegnato a farla e sono sempre in giro a suonare, viaggio molto, suono la mia chitarra quando ho del tempo libero. Ascolto la radio quando qualche volta sono in auto e c'è tanta buona musica anche qui al Rebellion e girando per i vari palchi ho sentito tante cose molto apprezzabili.  

 

F.C.  Riguardo alla sua produzione ha nuovi album in cantiere?

Ho prodotto il nuovo album " I delete" qualche mese fa e adesso sono impegnato in tour, e per qualche anno mi viene difficile pensare ad una nuova registrazione.  

 

F.C. -  Quando sente che un brano è pronto da registrare?

Non so esattamente quando un brano è veramente pronto, diciamo che è pronto quando sento che è buono. Quando ascolto e sento che è una cosa che non c'era ieri e c'è oggi, quando un brano è una cosa nuova in assoluto. E' la sensazione che prova una madre quando mette al mondo un figlio, dice "woowwww", ho fatto qualcosa di bello, che sento davvero nuovo.  

 

F.C. -  Quali sono i prossimi impegni?

I prossimi due anni mi vedono in giro per promuovere il lavoro appena fatto. Festivals, clubs, gigs. Insomma molto lavoro da fare, molto da vivere.  

 

 

 

L'Americano è terminato e con esso anche l'intervista. Lo ringraziamo per il tempo dedicatoci e per la sua gentilezza. TV Smith di persona come sul palco risulta essere una persona vera e semplice, così come è vera e semplice la musica che propone. Punk is not dead!   

 

 

INTERVIEW WITH TV SMITH    

 

We meet a legend of punk 77 and of english rock  too, out of Winter Gardens door  in Blackpool, the venue of Rebellion 2015, the most important punk festival in the world. We take a sit at the Cafe Number 5, it will be our headquarter for interviews. Our interview starts with "an Americano with milk".

 

 

FC: Your carreer is long and well known. When did it start?

(Playing) It's a way of life for me. I played music since I was a kid, at school, since I was 15/16 (years old). Before the Adverts I play at school and after three years I went to another band, a glam punk band and we play fifty – poppy and then I run to the Adverts and I finally start to play what I love.

 

AM: How many LP'S did you made?

I made a lot of records, I don' t know the number, I don't care about it,  I think  15 or 20.

 

FC: Which is your favourite record, in your production?

When you write song to choosing a favourite song is like choosing the favourite baby for a mother, you can't really do it.  But I like to see what people like to ear, for me what they enjoy is important and seeing they are not scared about ballads like Lion and the Lamb is intresting. Everyone knows it everywhere I go. It's not really punk song but a ballad very slow and emotional. I love to see the punk audience very interested in.

 

AM: Is your music a sort of melodic punk? Why do you prefer speak and playing in a melodic mood?

Yes, it is. I care only about what a song reveals and if it is a good song, that's why. I write songs and I don't think about what is it punk or if it is anything else but I think what is a good song. When you want a good song you want good words and good melody, a good tune. That's just normal when you play. Nothing else.

 

AM: Do you feel punk?

Yes. I am upgraded with old punk rock by my band and by what we did. I think punk is being honest always doing your best , finding an assessment being independent and say what you mean and I assolutely do that. When you do melodicly or aggressive or in any other way you do it in music or painting or whatever you choose. That's the attitude to be punk.

 

AM: What do you think about Rebellion Festival?

I think it's great! Really good to see together thousands and thousands of people, always super friendly, never aggressive, like a big big family.

 

FC: During Rebellion Festival days wheren't any tangle either in the street or in the venue and the thing you could notice is there is no much police around. If anything, we see a lot of  policemen in front of the discos along the waterfront. What do you think about this situation?

Disco... That's where the problem is! The people in the punk zine try to find  real values in what they do and in what they listen to. This kids growing up with this rubbish music, they're not ready to talk until they get drunk and everything around them get crazy because the music is awful. (He says laughing), There's nothing inside and they are very upset.  They have to get drunk!! (He says ironically) People listen to punk music thinks at the values of life.

 

FC: Travelling in Europe and around the world, playing with the Adverts and in your solo career, what is the place that you feel your artistic home?

I live here in Britain but I feel very in touch with Germany. Germany was the very first country that really can understood my solo career and so when nothing was happend here in Britain I started my gigs in Germany and also actually the German Country is very quick. There are a lot of clubs in Germany. I started my solo career in Germany, not in Britain, and they accepted me and along  the way I started to speak in German. Ja, Ich spreche Deutsch!

Recently I spent a couple of weeks there but I feel confortable everywhere and I meet a lot of  fantastic friends all over the world. I love everything here in Britain too:  funny country, wonderful people, great atmosphere.. When you travel a lot you can see the same people everywhere you go, the good people and the idiots too ( he says laughing)

 

FC: It's impressive that you plan to have gigs each of the four days  (3 days on the stage and 1 on the tram) at the Rebellion, aren't you tired, aren't you... you are a bit aged for this, aren't you?!

I played every dirty day! I am not tired, That's what I want to do! The travelling makes me tired but I am not tired when I go on the stage. Gigs give me energy back, when I see people enjoying it chargers my batteries.

 

AM: What comes first, music or words?

They generally come together. Sometimes it comes music and then words, sometimes first words and then music, sometimes they come together, sometimes it comes an idea but it takes a long time to wirte music and words... No rules...each ballads has its own history... no rules...

 

AM: What's your lyrics speak about?

Everything. Anything.. a mix up of personal life, society and politic as well. They speak about life, about my life, about anything... no rules...about it goes around me.

 

FC: What do you suggest to a new band to emerge?

It takes me a long time, many years!! (he says laughing)

Frst: just do!  That's all! Believe in yourself and do what you want to do! Believe that's what you are doing is the right thing! That's the first thing. If you do what you want to do then you have solid base. Then, Yes, it's difficult to emerge.

But never... ever scray in doing what you want to do, don't  let everyone else say you are right, how it gonna sound, don't stay in compromise... just do what you wanna do and everything happens and everyone annoys you saying your sound is rubbish, you have to know in your heart you are doing the right thing. That's all.

 

FC: Do you believe in God?

No. I am waiting for the proof! I believe in people and I think people have to believe in themself. Nothing else. I believe in what I can touch, in what I can see around me, that's anyway a kind of God: life, living, people. Don't care about God.

 

FC: How is your family approaching your career choice ?

My family was not too bad about it. It was happy to know I  do what I wanna do.

The fact is the Adverts have hits records in six months from the starting and for the parents , you know, it was great! (he says laughing) And it was the horrible punk music!! It was pretty good! ( laughing). They say if this is the best you can do, do whatever you like!

 

AM: What are your favourite bands?

It's difficult to make a choice. I can't answer to this question.

 

AM: Do you listen to music?

Not much because, you know, i travel and when I get time off I sit down with my guitar and I play. I listen to records occasionally when I am in the car and I listen a lot of good staff, here at Rebellion too going around the stages.

 

FC: What about new albums?

The last one  "I delete" few months ago  and it will take me few years and I will be very busy  to start another record.

 

FC:  When do you feel a song is ready to be recorded?

It's great! I don't know exactly when...I say... It's ready when i feel it's good. When i hear that it's something never heard before, when it's something new.

It's like a mother with the newborn that says "wowww" I did something good, and there is a good feeling.

 

FC: What about your next efforts?

Next two years I will be busy to promote my new album in festivals, clubs, gigs.

A lot of work, a lot of life to live!
