Steve Hackett Solo amore per la musica – Italian/English version

Steve Hackett è persona di poche parole. Speravamo per questa intervista con lui di Andrea Ghignone che ci narrasse delle sue gesta con i Genesis, che fosse prodigo di aneddoti musicali e di vita. Invece le sue risposte sono estremamente sintetiche (in confronto alle domande), fanno trapelare saggezza ed equilibrio di spirito. Buona lettura  (P.W.B.)

 

 

L'INTERVISTA

 

Andrea Ghignone (Distorsioni) – Steve, mentre risponderai a questa intervista sarai da qualche parte nel mondo per una delle date del tuo Genesis Extended Tour. Una tournée ricchissima di date, dall’Europa al Sud America, passando anche per gli States. Quali sono i motivi che ti hanno portato  a metterti in gioco  in un’impresa così impegnativa?

Steve Hackett - La musica merita tutto ciò che faccio e metto in essa. Mi sentivo di aggiungere qualcosa di nuovo, mentre ne celebravo la sua eredità.

 

Sul palco riproponi alcuni grandi classici composti con i Genesis. Hai fatto parte di questa band dal 1971 al 1977 incidendo alcuni dei suoi migliori dischi (“Nursery Cryme”, “Foxtrot”, “Selling England By The Pound”), ma nel contempo hai assistito ad uno dei periodi più travagliati della band pieno di importanti cambi di formazione. Peter Gabriel lascia il posto a Phil Collins e dopo qualche anno anche tu decidi di abbandonare il gruppo. Com’era internamente la situazione della band in quegli anni?

La band aveva incominciato a perdere membri per via della politica interna che limitava i singoli membri ad intraprendere una carriera solista pur rimanendo nel gruppo.

 

Ripercorrendo la tua carriera, dopo aver abbandonato i Genesis hai avuto una carriera solista decisamente prolifera nella quale hai avuto modo di esplorare vari generi, dal progressive rock a dischi un po’ più pop come “Cured”,  scrivendo addirittura due album di chitarra classica, “Bay Of Kings” e “Momentum”. C’è un momento della tua carriera solista che ha segnato maggiormente lo Steve Hackett di oggi?

“Spectral Mornings” è stato uno dei punti più alti della mia carriera, ma  sento di aver raggiunto un nuovo stadio  di grande musica oggi. Sono molto eccitato dal nuovo album che rilascerò nel 2015.

 

Nell’arco della tua carriera hai suonato anche con altre band tra cui il supergruppo  GTR, in cui dividevi la scena con Steve Howe degli Yes, e i Gordian Knot. Proprio quest’ultimo ha una line-up decisamente particolare: hai suonato, per dire un paio di nomi, con John Myung dei Dream Theater e Sean Malone, ex Cynic. Come è stato trovarsi in studio con persone abituate a suonare un genere così diverso dal tuo, decisamente più ‘heavy’.

Abbiamo funzionato separatamente. Ho registrato a casa e mandato le mie parti alla band. Ho lavorato in maniera autonoma. Per il resto tutti noi apprezziamo l’uno la musica dell’altro.

 

Cosa ne pensi del mondo della musica oggi? Le possibilità per i giovani sono diminuite, o almeno, il modo di diventare musicisti di professione sembra essere cambiato. Da qualche decennio per un giovane musicista la strada sembra più dura, anche per via dei vari talent shows.

Penso che i musicisti dovrebbero ascoltarsi l’un l’altro, non farlo con un pubblico spesso inesperto. Hanno bisogno di imparare a scrivere musica con altri musicisti, oppure per forza di cose le loro carriere saranno molto brevi , anche per i talentuosi, il che è una vergogna.

 

Ad oggi la tua carriera da musicista è decisamente ricca e varia. Cosa ci riserva lo Steve Hackett di domani? Un ritorno alle origini progressive o un’apertura a generi nuovi, magari con collaborazioni inusuali ed inaspettate?

Mi sto concentrando sul materiale inedito che pubblicherò l’anno prossimo, nel quale verranno inclusi vari generi differenti. Le collaborazioni sono sempre possibili.

 

Parlando da musicista, credo che scrivere musica a vent’anni, a quaranta e a sessanta sia molto diverso, sia per i temi che per la maturità artistica. Per te è stato così?

Sì, più divento vecchio e più divento selettivo,  e più esperienza devo attingere.

 

Hai avuto una carriera decisamente importante in cui hai potuto collaborare con moltissimi artisti, c’è una persona o un gruppo in particolare con il quale ti piacerebbe, o ti sarebbe piaciuto, chiuderti in uno studio di registrazione e comporre qualcosa insieme?

Sto ancora sperimentando con altri artisti. Non c’è nessuna persona o gruppo in particolare.

 

Pensi che ci sia oggi un gruppo in particolare che incarna lo spirito di innovazione che ha caratterizzato il progressive rock negli anni settanta?

Non c’è una band in particolare, ma molti gruppi hanno molto da offrire.

 

Ci sono tantissime persone che continuano ad ascoltare la tua musica, sia i lavori da solista che quelli con i Genesis. Molte di queste canzoni hanno circa trent’anni, c’è un segreto in particolare per creare dei capolavori immortali?

Solo amare ciò che stai facendo, e non lasciare che nessuno comprometta le tue scelte e la tua ispirazione. Sii sincero con te stesso!

 

 

INTERVIEW WITH STEVE HACKETT

 

Andrea Ghignone (Distorsioni) - While you’ll be interviewed, you will be somewhere in the world for one of the dates of Genesis Extended tour. A tour full of concerts, from Europe to America. What are the reasons that have led you to get involved in such a difficult undertaking?

Steve Hackett - I felt the music deserved everything I could put into it. I felt I could add something new to it whilst at the same time celebrating its legacy.

 

You play some great classics composed with Genesis on-stage. You've been part of this band from 1971 to 1977, and you have recorded some of the best records that have been ever made with them (Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound...), but at the same time you witnessed one of the most troubled period of the band, full of major lineup changes. Peter Gabriel gives way to Phil Collins and, after a few years, you decided to leave the group too. What was the situation of the band at that time?

The band was starting to lose members because of internal politics concerning whether individual members should be allowed to have solo careers whilst still being in the band.

 

Recalling your career, we could say that, after leaving Genesis, you had a very prolific solo career in which you've got to explore various genres, from progressive rock to a little more pop records as "Cured". You even wrote two albums like “Bay Of Kings” and “Momentum”, which are exclusively composed with the classical guitar. There is a moment of your solo career that has marked most of Steve Hackett today?

Spectral Mornings was one of the high points, and I feel I have reached a new high point today. I’m excited about my new album which is due for release in 2015.

 

Throughout your career, you have played with other bands like the supergroup GTR, in which you shared the scene with Steve Howe of Yes and Gordian Knot. The last one in particolar has a very unusual lineup, including John Myung of Dream Theater and Sean Malone, ex-Cynic. What was it like being in the studio with people who are used to play a much heavier genre, pretty different from yours.

We functionsed separately. I recorded at home and sent the parts to the band. I functioned autonomously. We all appreciated each other’s music.

 

What do you think of today’s music industry? The possibilities for young people to become professional musicians decreased and, lately, the road seems even harder because of the talent shows that are now on air, that often facilitate people with pull. What’s your opinion about it?

I think that musicians should audition each other. I don’t feel people should be auditioned by the public when they are inexperienced. They need to learn to write with other musicians, or else careers can be very short, even for the gifted, which is a shame.

 

Nowadays your career as a musician is already very rich and varied. What lies ahead? A return to the progressive roots or an opening to new genres, perhaps with unusual and unexpected collaborations?

I’m going to concentrate on my own original material next year, which will involve many different genres. Collaborations are always possible down the line...

               

Speaking as a musician, I think that writing music when you are twenty, forty or sixty years old is very different, both for the themes and for the artistic maturity. Do you agree with that ?

Yes, the older I get the more selective I am and the more experience I have to draw on.

 

You have had a very important career in which you’ve been able to work with many artists. Is there a particular person or group that you would like or you would have liked to record an album with?

I’m still exploring with others. There’s no particular person or group.

 

Up to now, do you think that there is one group in particular that embodies the spirit of innovation that has characterized the progressive rock in the Seventies?In your opinion,iIs there a band that tries to make something new referring to the greats of the past, but trying to overcome them with more artistic innovations?

There are no particular bands, although many groups have much to offer.

 

As of today, there are many people who continue to listen to your music, both solo works and those with Genesis. Many of these songs are about thirty years old. Is there  a particular secret  to create immortal masterpieces?

Just to love what you do and don’t let anyone compromise your choices or your inspiration. Be true to yourself!
