Melvins Intervista con Buzz Osborne (King Buzzo) – Italian/English version

Leggendo questa intervista ci si potrebbe chiedere se King Buzzo, lo storico frontman dei Melvins ci stia prendendo in giro, soprattutto se non lo si conosce bene. Chi si porrà questa domanda sappia che sì, Buzz Osborne ci sta davvero prendendo per i fondelli. Quest'uomo è davvero una goduria da intervistare.

L'abbiamo contattato via mail, ci ha risposto durante le pause tra una sessione di registrazione e l'altra. Buona lettura e buon divertimento!

 L'INTERVISTA

Andrea Ghignone (Distorsioni) - Nella tua carriera hai pubblicato tantissimi dischi. Solo durante l'anno scorso ne hai registrati ben due, il primo “Hold it in” è stato composto con i Melvins, mentre il secondo “This Machine Kills Artists” è stato il debutto della tua carriera solista. Cosa seguirà in futuro? Nuovi progetti? Dischi con i Melvins? Altre novità?
Buzz Osborne (King Buzzo) - Ho davvero pubblicato un sacco di dischi... ed è vero che ho pubblicato sia un album con i Melvins che uno solista in acustico in un solo anno! Ragionando su questa cosa non è difficile immaginare che sarò coinvolto ancora in tanti altri lavori e in progetti legati ai Melvins in un futuro prossimo. Pubblicheremo un album il primo di aprile, un disco che abbiamo incominciato a registrare 17 anni fa con un tizio di nome Mike Kunka. Si intitolerà in una maniera abbastanza sorprendente: “Mike and the Melvins, Three Men and a Baby”. Inoltre abbiamo in programma un altro LP con i Melvins che uscirà entro la fine dell'anno, a presto ulteriori notizie.

Parlando del tuo ultimo disco This Machine Kills Artists, è stata la prima volta in cui hai usato la chitarra acustica regalando così a King Buzzo una nuova veste. Ci spieghi il motivo di questa scelta e da dove è venuta l'idea? Pensi che i fans abbiano apprezzato questa scelta?
Una nuova veste? Più che altro la chiamerei un mumu [Il mumu o muumuu è una tipica veste Hawaiiana. nda]. Con “This Machine Kills Artists” volevo fare solamente qualcosa di differente e penso che il piano abbia funzionato. Se i fan hanno apprezzato? Penso di sì, ma non posso mai dire. Fortunatamente per me mi preoccupo davvero poco di queste cose. Credo che potrebbe piacergli, ma, a parte ciò, non ho alcun controllo su quello che pensano le masse.

Con i tuoi 30 anni di carriera avrai osservato il mondo della musica cambiare molto. Cosa pensi dello showbusiness al giorno d'oggi? Sembra che non ci saranno più artisti che verranno ricordati per sempre, come possono essere i Melvins, i Nirvana o Jimi Hendrix...

Questo è lo spirito giusto...Immagino quindi che per te tutto ciò che gira nel mondo della musica attuale sia una cazzata non degna di memoria. Io non la vedo in questo modo. Le cose possono essere differenti, ma dubito che gli atteggiamenti della gente siano cambiati così tanto. Conosco grandi rockstar le cui attitudini non sono cambiate di una dannata virgola. Io vedo un futuro luminoso e con le strade pavimentate d'oro e AMO il fatto che ci abbia messi nell'elenco PRIMA sia di Hendrix che dei Nirvana!

Uno dei progetti più interessanti della tua carriera è stato il supergruppo Fantomas, con Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo e Trevor Dunn. Voi avete pubblicato quattro album, l'ultimo datato 2005. Pensi che possa esistere una possibilità di vedervi di nuovo suonare insieme o di poter ascoltare qualcosa di composto insieme a oltre 10 anni dall'uscita di “Suspended Animation”?
Sì! Lo annuncio proprio ora! I Fantomas pubblicheranno un nuovo album nel 2016 e un tour di 200 date in giro per il mondo! In verità sarà un box set di sette album, tre pieni di nuove canzoni e gli altri quattro conterranno le reincisioni dal vivo dei nostri dischi precedenti! Il tour si articolerà su noi che suoniamo tutti tre gli album nuovi e tutte le canzoni dei lavori precedenti in ordine cronologico...per una durata di SEI ORE. Nessuna pausa e ci saranno MrBungle come band d'apertura. MrBungle suoneranno ogni canzone da “The Real Thing Album” dei Faith No More a ripetizione per ALTRE SEI ORE!

Hai composto un grande numero di canzoni e sei l'ispirazione per molti musicisti in giro per il mondo, ma chi è che ha ispirato King Buzzo?
Hendrix e i Nirvana.

Le tue canzoni sono davvero interessanti, da dove prendi l'ispirazione per scriverle?  Trent'anni di carriera hanno influenzato in qualche maniera il tuo modo di lavorare?
I testi sembrano provenire dal nulla. PRESTO! Da dove viene la parola PRESTO? Credo che la risposta la si possa trovare in un minuto ricercandola su internet, come farebbe qualsiasi ispirazione, oltre Hendrix e i Nirvana, che abbia mai avuto.

Come ben sai, il mondo della musica è cambiato molto da quando hai iniziato a suonare. Io penso che ad oggi molti musicisti talentuosi non riescono ad emergere e continuano così a suonare nei locali underground. Ci sapresti suggeriresti una band poco conosciuta che trovi interessante in maniera particolare?
Mi piacciono molto Le Butcherettes

Sei stato uno dei primi chitarristi ad utilizzare l'accordatura Drop-D. Quando hai scoperto questo modo particolare di suonare il tuo strumento?

Ho scoperto l'accordatura da qualche ciccione, peso per la società ad Aberdeen, nello stato di Washington, che poi è finito per andare in prigione dopo aver rubato della dinamite.

Ultima domanda, ma non meno importante. Cos'è la musica per te?

Penso che sia la domanda meno importante. Cos'è la musica per me? Non lo so davvero, ma la amo. Non posso spiegarvi ogni singolo dettaglio.

INTERVIEW WITH BUZZ OSBORNE (THE MELVINS)

Andrea Ghignone (Distorsioni) - In your career you published a lot of records. Only during the last year you recorded two albums, the first one “Hold it in” has been composed with The Melvins and the second one “This Machine Kills Artists” has been the debut of your solo career. What lies ahead for you? New projects, new records with the Melvins or something else?


Buzz Osborne (King Buzzo) - I have indeed put out a lot of records… And it is true that I put out both a Melvins record AND a solo acoustic record in one year!… With that in mind it’s not hard to imagine I’m going to be involved with even more records and Melvins related projects in the near future. We have a record coming out April 1^st that we started recording 17 years ago with a dude named Mike Kunka. It’s called amazingly enough, Mike and the Melvins, Three Men and a Baby. Then we have another new Melvins record coming later this year, more info soon.

Talking about your last record This Machine Kills Artists, it was the first time you ever approached the acoustic guitar giving to King Buzzo a new dress. Can you explain this choice? Where did the idea come from? Do you think that your fans enjoyed this choice?
New dress? I call it a mumu… With “This Machine Kills Artists” I simply wanted to do something different. I think that plan worked. Did the fans enjoy it? I think so but I never can tell. Fortunately for me I worry very little about things of that nature. I think they should like it but beyond that I have no control over what the masses think.

With your 30 years of career you have seen the world of music changing very much. What do you think about the showbusiness nowadays? It seems like there will never be artists that will be remembered forever such as Melvins, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix...
That’s the spirit… I guess to you everything in the music business today is all fucked up and unmemorable. I don’t see it that way. Things may be different but I doubt peoples attitudes have changed much. I know big rock stars attitudes haven’t changed one goddam bit. I see the future as being bright and the streets being paved with gold and I LOVE the fact that you put us in line BEFORE both Hendrix and Nirvana!

One of the most interesting projects in your career is Fantomas, with Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo and Trevor Dunn. You published 4 records, the last dated back in 2005. Do you think it could exist a possibility to see you again playing live or composing together something new after ten years since the release of “Suspended Animation”?

YES! I’m announcing it right now! Fantomas has a new album coming out in 2016 and a 200 date world tour planned as well! In fact it’s a seven album set with three being brand new songs and the other four being live recordings of all of our old albums! The tour will consist of us playing all three albums worth of new material and then every song on all four of the old albums in chronological order… For SIX HOURS! No breaks and Mr Bungle will be opening. Mr. Bungle will be preforming every song on Faith No Mores “The Real Thing Album” over and over for SIX MORE HOURS!

You composed a huge number of songs and you are the inspiration for many musicians all around the world, but who are the inspirations for King Buzzo?
Hendrix and Nirvana.

Your songs are very interesting, where do you draw inspiration from to write your lyrics ? How much over thirty years of career condition your work?
Lyrics seem to just come out of thin air. PRESTO! Where did the word PRESTO come from? I guess the answer could be found with a one minute search on the internet as would any musical inspiration besides Hendrix and Nirvana I have ever had.

As you know, the world of music has changed a lot since you started to play. I think that nowadays a lot of talented musicians can't stand out, so they continue to play in underground, can you suggest us a little known band in particular in which you find interest?
Buzz Osborne: I like Le Butcherettes a great deal.

You are one of the first first guitar player who used Drop-D tuning. When you discovered this particular way to play your instrument?
I discovered the tuning from some ham bone in Aberdeen Washington who ended up going to jail for stealing dynamite.

This is the last but not least question. What is music for you?
I think it is the least question. What is music for me? I don’t know really but I love it. I can’t be expected to explain every sparrows fall.
