Golden Void L’oro di San Francisco – Italian/English Version

goldenvoidvynil

L’INTERVISTA

Ubaldo Tarantino (Distorsioni) - Ciao Isaiah, Come stai? Ci puoi dire come è iniziato.

Come è stata l’esperienza in studio?

golden void EPCome vi trovate a vivere a San Francisco?

Isaiah - Per me, decisamente Hendrix!

golden void the curveChe cosa vi ha fatto iniziare a suonare?

Ciao!

INTERVIEW WITH GOLDEN VOID

Four piece San Francisco stoner-rock band Golden Void has recently published his debut album of same title licensed  through Thrill Jokey  and it’s Touring Europe for album promotion. We met Isaiah Mitchell (voice and guitar), Aaron Morgan (bass), Justin Pinkerton (drums) e Camilla Saufly-Mitchell (voice and keyboards) during their only italian date at Lo-Fi in Milan.

golden voidUbaldo Tarantino (Distorsioni) - Hey Isaiah! How are things? I’m very pleased to get to speak with one of my favorite guitar players and thanks very much for taking the time! It’s a pleasure to have you with us here on Distorsioni. I hear this is not an entirely brand new act however. How did Golden Void initially get started? You’ve known some of your band mates for a long time, right?

Isaiah - Yes, me and Justin and Aaron were college mates long time ago and in 2008 I met Camilla and decided to come back to San Francisco so, we started to get in touch again and decided to do something together.

Musically, what attracts you to the band? Does it feel connected in any way to the music you’ve done with Earthless, or is this exploring a completely different section of your musical interests?

When we start we just have the idea of playing some rock music nothing defined. Justin started to compose the songs and the path was coming out by itself.

Your guitar work on the record is amazing — Did you take inspiration from a particular guitar player?

Thank you for the compliment! Let’s say that I like a lot people like Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler and Robert Fripp  just to name few.

What was the studio experience like? Was recording a lot of the album live-to-tape an predefined choice?

The form is more song-structured and not based on improvisation like it is happening in Earthless. We all wanted to record the bass, drums, keyboards and guitars together live for a collectively “inspired” take. We wanted it to sound live and raw and it really was. It was a fun time recording.

goldenvoidisaiahmitchellWhat’s it like being the vocalist as well as the guitarist here? Having been known for so much instrumental work, I’m curious about the challenges and rewards of becoming a lead singer.

I love singing. I’ve sang and played guitar since high school times. In the past I used to sing but not often. In Golden Void I have the occasion to do it at same level as playing guitar and I really like to do both at same time especially live. The hardest thing about singing is not being able to sing what I want. I don’t have a crazy vocal range, but I figure out what works/sounds best in my comfort zone and stick with that. Just to give you an example, last night we were in a club with a lot of cigarette’s smoke in the stage area so, I had my throat very hard tested by it. Just takes practice.

What are some of your favorite psych rock albums? Can you recommend some great under-appreciated artist/bands for our readers to go check out and are there in San Francisco any local bands you feel you can suggest us to give a listen to?

Ha ha ha … there’re so many! Rory Gallagher was surely under-rated at his time and even 13th Floor Elevators, Blues Creation and Chrome. About new bands I can suggest you  Camilla’s side project Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, they’re really good  (you can check their really good 2012 album “Manzanita”), Hot Lunch, Drunk Horse, Carlton Melton, Lecherous Gaze, Howlin Rain, East Bay Grease, High on Fire

Justin and Camilla - Nowadays looking for new bands has become really difficult in terms of how you look forward to.

goldenvoidIsaiah-MitchellCamilla - While MTV is no more airing music in USA, there’s the internet and you can discover new bands by looking at the musical taste of them on their social media page. MySpace was great from this point of view with the “Best friends” chart on every band’s page so you could scroll-down and see other bands/artists and go to check for them. Now Facebook is in some way copying this system by highlighting your musical tastes and so on.

Justin
- It seems to me that nowadays we are like we’re back in the ‘50s and ‘60s. At that time, you had the singles more highlighted than the album, peole was hearing to the singles on the radio and on the Joke-Box more that knowing about the album. Today a lot of bands publish an album with 3-4 songs that are pretty good and planned to be the singles and youtube videos while the remaining songs of the album are just fillers.

Isaiah - Yes, in the past, an album was concentrated on maybe 10 songs and 45 minutes of music so, as a musician, you can more focus on the project while today a lot of bands are doing 60 minutes  or more records with difficulty to keep the project focused.

How have you found living in San Francisco to be?

Aaron - Currently, all of us are living outside of San Francisco, the cost of living is really too high there and even the social situation even if it getting better with the current government is still delicate.

Camilla - Yes, it is like that,  while from the musician point of view, it’s still ok but, generally speaking we like more playing in the mid-west and Europe were people attending to gigs is more participating at the show compared to  SF and LA.

goldenvoidliveIf you could choose just one: Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Hawkwind or Hendrix? Who would you pick and why?

Isaiah - Hendrix definitely for me, he sounds so innovative even today, if you listen to his last published album it sound still so fresh and great that you can’t believe that it was hidden for so long time and, considering that he was recording everything he played you can imagine how many things are still hidden somewhere.

Camilla
-  I definitely choose Led Zeppelin, I really like the way they compose songs, the huge amount of different instruments they engaged with and the musical spectrum they were able to explore.

Justin - I choose Black Sabbath cause I really like the way the compose songs and the atmosphere they are able to create.

Aaron - Yes, Led Zeppelin for me too cause I really like the composition’s method of Plant-Page. Hawkwind are more like a wall of sound while black Sabbath are more song-structured, let’s say thay we try to manage something in the middle.

What was it that first got you into playing music? Has music always been a big part of your life?

Isaiah -
Yes, all of us had some parents playing music in his family when we were young.
My father, for example, was a guitarist too so, it has been really natural to get involved in music and you know, I met Camilla while crossing our bands so, music is really a part of our life.

What kind of music are you listening to recently?

goldenvoidliveIsaiah - Lot of Reggae stuff like Lee Scratch Perry, but even to things heavy metal that our tour manager plays in the tour bus (he laughs)

Camilla - I am listening to different kind of music even house music recently.

Justin - Due to the fact that in the past I was a lot involved with Hip-Hop I am always listening to a lot of it and recently even to a compilation series called Éthiopiques of Ethyopian music of different genres, it’s really interesting to take a listen to.

Aaron - I use to listen to country music but even stuffs like Brian Eno that we played on tour bus during crossing the alps coming from Austria to Italy and it was really magical

Thanks a lot for taking the time out to talk to us guys and best of luck moving forward with all your new projects and  the promotion of the Golden Void album.

Isaiah - Thank you for reaching out and I hope you enjoyed the show tonight! All the best!

Ubaldo Tarantino
