Laughing Soup Dish (1981-1990) In viaggio verso la terra acida – Italian/English Version

Fra le tante formazioni emerse dalla splendida ondata neo-psichedelica degli anni ottanta i Laughing Soup Dish sono stati una delle più bizzarre e geniali. Si formarono nel 1981 con una formazione iniziale di soli tre elementi, Wayne Larsen, chitarra e voce, la sua ragazza Elena Papavero al basso e voce e Timmy Gluttling alla batteria. Presto con l'arrivo di Marc Saxton, voce e chitarra e Kyle Zimmerman, batteria il gruppo pareva aver finalmente trovato una sua precisa identità e stabilità. L'eredità musicale lasciata da questa band originaria di Long Branch, New Jersey si compone solamente di un singolo e due album. Ma si tratta di lavori di straordinaria creatività e perfettamente allineate alle migliori opere dei gruppi che negli anni sessanta hanno pesantemente influenzato i Laughing Soup Dish.

Il primo singolo, uscito come le altre cose dei LSD per la Voxx,  è il bellissimo "Teenage Lima bean", con un sound debitore dei 13th Floor Eleevators, con voci filtrate molto Barrett/Pink Floyd style, nastri che corrono al contrario  ed è da considerarsi una delle canzoni acide più riuscite della sua epoca, band del Paisley Underground comprese.  Il titolo è ripreso da un comic book che citava il nome di una ragazza di 14 anni dalla pazza personalità che si chiamava Lima Bean. Il brano comparirà anche nella versione CD della fantastica compilation (27 brani) di garage revival anni ‘80 “Be a Caveman: The Best of the Voxx Garage Revival” (2000, Voxx Records), uscita all’alba del terzo millennio - ristampata dalla stessa etichetta in CD nel 2008 - contemplante episodi delle più grandi band internazionali che diedero in quella decade nuovo lustro e dignità al genere garage. Non meno pazzesco il retro di Rainy day sponge, con altri ipnotici effetti ottenuti da Larsen con l'ausilio di eBow, una diavoleria elettronica capace di far vibrare le corde della chitarra ed ottenere suoni devastanti e disturbanti. Il pezzo, come tiene a ricordare lo stesso Wayne,  parla "di una persona molto egoista che si siede ed aspetta che succeda qualcosa" ed altre frasi dal contenuto misterioso. Un 7" che rimane tra gli artefatti più ricercati e preziosi degli eighties. Il passaggio dal singolo al disco d'esordio vero e proprio era imminente.

WE ARE THE DISH

Nel 1987 vide la luce "We are the dish", pazzesca opera prima che si presentava pure con una coloratissima copertina colorata, con disegni di D.W. Griffiths, molto simili a quelli dei dischi dei Plan 9, altra grande formazione dell'epoca. La cosa più sorprendente è che al tempo di questo disco sia Marc Saxton che Elena Papavero stavano abbandonando il gruppo per formare i Watch Children e quindi Wayne Larsen si ritrovò da solo o quasi. Fu solo l'insistenza di Greg Shaw, che soddisfatto della qualità del singolo aveva insistito per avere un disco completo. Wayne qui, oltre a cantare, suonò tutte le chitarre, il basso, in compagnia del solo  Kyle Zimmerman dietro i tamburi. Poi fece pesanti sovraincisioni e trattamenti vari. Qui esplode tutta la creatività ed il genio di Wayne Larsen, tutte le 12 tracce infatti sono a firma sua, nella sua più alta espressione. Un disco in tutto e per tutto suonato sotto l'effetto di sostanze allucinogene, in perfetta simbiosi col nome LSD: un fantastico esercizio di delirante psichedelia. Geniale l'opener con tanto di sveglia elettrica di Acidland, favoloso pezzo dall'aria stralunata, con qualche similitudine vocale con il primo Bevis Frond, che proprio nel 1987 dava alle stampe i suoi primi preziosi lavori. Belli i furori elettrici di The flowering e princess, con musica di Danny Mintz, e geniali le intuizioni rumoristiche di Now you know. Black river e For the yesterday, con tanto si simulazione di decollo aereo, sono quanto di più vicino alla forma di canzone tradizionale, mentre la contorta Lost impressions si conclude con un bel break di chitarra finale. Un disco originalissimo ed unico nel panorama neo-psichedelico degli eighties.

UNDERTHROW THE OVERGROUND

Si dovettero aspettare ben 3 anni perché i LSD ci regalassero il suo degno successore, "Underthrow the overground",  secondo notevole manifesto di tarda psichedelia. Il disco si apre con In pieces, che al pari di altre mirabili tracce come Cellophane sailboat e Weathering strangely ha lo stesso sapore ed andatura  di quelle tracce bellissime che si ascoltavano nelle varie raccolte della serie "Pebbles" o quelle della Bam Caruso. Anche qui non c'è nulla che non sia di pregevole fattura, vedi Angel air e Nether planet overhead, altre due incredibili tracce acide. La storia discografica dei LSD purtroppo termina qui. Wayne Larsen ha dichiarato che esistono varie outtakes di buona fattura ma forse non in numero sufficiente per compilare un terzo album. Un disco che ad ogni buon conto difficilmente avrebbe potuto vedere la luce, visto che Greg Shaw agli inizi degli anni novanta pareva poco propenso a dare alla luce altri lavori di stampo psichedelico, vista l'impetuoso ondata grunge che si stava formando. Ma ancora più strano e triste è che i lavori dei Laughing Soup Dish non abbiano avuto una degna ristampa in digitale come molti appassionati della loro musica stanno chiedendo da tanto tempo, in Italia e Grecia in particolare, paesi dove pare i nostri abbiano un buon seguito di estimatori. Laughing Soup Dish - A journey to the Acid Land (1981-1990)

Among the many bands emerged from the splendid neo-psychedelic renaissance  of  the eighties  Laughing Soup Dish were one of the most bizarre and brilliant. Formed in 1981 with an initial line-up of just three members, Wayne Larsen, guitar and vocals, his girlfriend Elena Papavero on bass and vocals and Timmy Gluttling on drums. Pretty soon with the arrival of Marc Saxton, guitar/vocals and Kyle Zimmerman, drums, the band seemed to have finally found its identity and stability. The musical heritage left by this band,  from Long Branch, New Jersey,  consists only of a single and two full-length albums. But these are works of extraordinary creativity and perfectly aligned to the best works of 1960s groups, who has heavily influenced the Laughing Soup Dish.

The first single is the fantastic "Teenage Lima bean", with a sound borrower of 13th Floor Eleevators, filtered voices much Barrett/Floyd style, ribbons running backwards and is considered one of the most successful acid songs of its era, Paisley Underground bands including. The title is taken from a comic book that mentions the name of a 14-year-old girl from mad dignitaries named Lima Bean. No less crazy flip side  Rainy day sponge with hypnotic effects obtained from Larsen with an eBow, an electronics object capable of devilry vibrate the strings of the guitar and get a devastating and disturbing sounds. The piece, as does remember Wayne himself, speaks of "a very selfish person who sits and waits for something to happen" and other phrases from the mysterious content. A 7 " that remains among the most sought-after and precious artifacts of the eighties. The transition from single to debut album proper was imminent.

WE ARE THE DISH

In 1987 saw the light "We are the dish", a really crazy work with a front cover with colorful drawings, here of D.W. Griffiths, very similar to those of Plan 9 disks, other major formation of the era. The most surprising thing is that at the time of this disc both Marc Saxton that Elena Papavero were abandoning the group to form the Watch Children and then Wayne Larsen remained alone or almost. It was not until Greg Shaw's insistence that, satisfied with the quality of the single Lima Bean had insisted on having a full album. Wayne here, in addition to singing, played all guitars, bass guitar, with only Kyle Zimmerman behind the drums. Then he overdubs and did heavy treatments. Here explodes all the creativity and genius of Wayne Larsen, all 12 tracks are his signature, in its highest expression. A disk entirely played under the influence of hallucinogenic substances, in perfect symbiosis with the name LSD, you cannot remain indifferent or upset, depending on the case, after listening to this amazing exercise of delirious psychedelia. The brilliant opener Acidland, complete with electrical alarm, is a fabulous piece from the distraught air, with some vocal similarity with the first Bevis Frond that in 1987 published his first important works. Beautiful is the electric fury of The flowering and Princess, music by Danny Mintz, and brilliant insights noisy by Now you know. Black river and For the yesterday with  take off aircraft simulation are the closest to the traditional song form, while the tortured Lost impressions concludes with a nice final guitar break. An original and unique album in the  neo-psychedelic scene of the eighties.

UNDERTHROW THE OVERGROUND

You had to wait 3 years well because LSD give us his worthy successor, "Underthrow the overground", second chapter of brilliant late psychedelia. The disc opens with In pieces, which like other admirable tracks such as Cellophane sailboat and Weathering strangely has the same taste and pace of those beautiful songs that you listened to in various collections such as Pebbles or Bam Caruso compilations. But even here there is nothing that is not fine workmanship, see Angel air and Nether planet overhead two amazing acid tracks. Record history of LSD unluckily ends here. Wayne Larsen said that there are many well-made outtakes but perhaps not enough to build a third album. A disc that at every event he could hardly see the light as Greg Shaw in the early 1990s it seemed unwilling to give birth to other psychedelic mold due to the impetuous wave grunge that was forming. But even weirder and sad is that the work of Laughing Soup Dish could not have been a worthy re-release in digital as many fans of their music are asking for a long time, in Italy and Greece in particular, two countries where LSD  have a good following of admirers.
