Il suo album d'esordio si intitola "St Clears", omaggio al piccolo centro del Galles, ed  è una delle cose migliori di questo scorcio dell'anno. Siamo certi che ne sentiremo riparlare. L'INTERVISTA

Giancarlo Susanna (Distorsioni) - Perché hai deciso di registrare il tuo album da solo?

David Roberts - Be', l'ho fatto con il mio amico Adam (Huyton), che ha registrato tutto ed è stato molto divertente. Uscivo da un lungo periodo di depressione e penso che fare il disco e finirlo mi abbia aiutato a riprendere fiducia e a cominciare a stare un po' di più nel mondo.

Non hai proprio pensato di chiamare un produttore o un discografico?

All'epoca volevo soltanto fare le cose con i miei tempi e senza che fosse coinvolto qualcun altro. Avevo un'idea molto chiara di quello che volevo fare e un budget sufficiente per farlo da solo con Adam, così non vedevo ragioni per coinvolgere altre persone. Non mi importava molto uscire con un'etichetta. Avrebbe potuto aiutarmi, ma alla fine era meglio fare tutto da solo e sbagliare per conto mio, imparando mentre andavo avanti.

Quanti strumenti suoni? Hai studiato o sei un autodidatta?

Suono la chitarra, la batteria e un po' di pianoforte. Riesco anche a tirar fuori una nota da un violoncello. Ho preso lezioni di batteria quando andavo a scuola. Ho imparato da mio padre e dai miei fratelli. Imparare anche tutte le parti di chitarra di John Frusciante e di Jeff Buckley era una parte importante di tutto questo.

 
Le tue influenze e la musica che è importante per te.

Amo tutti i generi musicali – sono cresciuto in una casa in cui si ascoltava molta musica classica. I miei genitori amavano le grandi cose che avevano sentito alla fine degli anni 60 e nei primi 70, così me ne sono innamorato anch'io.  Joni Mitchell, CSNY, James Taylor and George Harrison sono tutti molto importanti per me. Penso che Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith, Nick Drake siano persone che ho ascoltato in momenti particolari e torno sempre da loro. Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Miles Davis, gli Allman, l'LCD Soundsystem, The Doors, John Frusciante... Ci sono tante cose che non ho ancora ascoltato e sono sicuro che questa lista continuerà ad allungarsi.

Scrittori e poeti che ami.

Amo tutto quello che ho letto di Herman Hesse, "Siddartha" e "Il lupo della steppa". Henry David Thoreau. "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" per me è un libro speciale.

E Dylan Thomas?

Non ho letto molte sue cose. Ma un po' di tempo fa un mio amico mi ha dato un suo libro e sono sicuro che lo leggerò.

Cosa stai facendo in questo periodo?
Sto lavorando a molte nuove idee – ho realizzato molti demo dopo aver finito l'album. Ho suonato molto in Galles e a Londra e sento che sto diventando un performer migliore. Per questo voglio che i miei concerti da solo siano al centro delle mie prossime uscite. Alla fine dell'anno farò uscire un EP, ma metterò anche qualche brano on line. Spero di fare concerti e tour il prossimo anno e forse farò qualche data in giro per l'Europa.

Giancarlo Susanna (Distorsioni) – Why have you recorded your album all alone?
David Roberts - Well, I made the album with my friend Adam who recorded everything so that was good fun. I was coming out of a long period of depression and I think making the album and finishing it really helped me to get some confidence back and start being in the world a bit more.

Did you ever think to call a producer or a record company?

 I think at the time I wanted to just do things at my own pace and not have anyone else involved. I had a clear picture of what I wanted to do, and just about enough budget to make it myself, with Adam, so I didn’t see any reason to involve anyone else. I wasn’t too concerned with having a label release it. It may have helped but in the end it was a worthwhile process to do it all myself and make the mistakes myself, learning as I went along.

How many instruments you play? At school or by yourself?

I play guitars, drums and a bit of piano. I can just about get a note out of a cello too. I had lessons on drums when I was at school but never really had guitar lessons. I learnt from my Dad and brothers. Learning all the John Frusciante and Jeff Buckley guitar parts was a big part of it too.

Your influences: music that is important for you.

I love all sorts of music- I grew up with lots of classical music being played in the house when I was very young. My parents loved all of the great stuff from their youth in the late 60s - early 70s so I came to love all of that in time too. Joni Mitchell, CSNY, James Taylor and George Harrison are all very important to me. I think Jeff Buckley, Ellliot Smith, Nick Drake are people I had big phases of listening too and I always come back to them. Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Miles Davis, The Allman Brothers, LCD Soundsystem, The Doors, John Frusciante…….. I know there’s so much I haven’t heard yet though, so I’m sure the list will keep growing.

Writers and poets you love.
I love what I’ve read by Herman Hesse - Siddartha and Steppenwolf. Henry David Thoreau. Bhagavad Gita ‘As It Is’ is the most special book to me.

Do you know Dylan Thomas?
I haven’t read lots of Dylan Thomas yet. But I was given a book by a friend a while ago so I’ll come to it I’m sure.

What are you doing now?
I’m working on lots of new ideas- I’ve made so many new demos since doing the album. I’ve been playing lots around Wales and some in London and I feel I’m becoming a better performer so I want the solo performance to be at the core of any new releases. I’ll be releasing an ep later in the year but will have some new tracks online soon. I’m hoping to perform and tour as much as I can next year, and maybe get to play some dates around Europe.
