Sick Of It All, band hardcore punk americana ormai leggendaria, nascono a New York nel 1986 dai fratelli Lou (voce) e Pete Koller (chitarra), Armand Majidi (batteria) e Rich Cipriano (basso) successivamente sostituito da Craig Setari. Mai allontanatisi da ciò in cui credevano, continuano ancora oggi a scrivere liriche che si oppongono alle politiche americane belligeranti e offensive dei diritti umani, dell’ambiente e della società tutta. Hanno inciso 18 dischi (EP compresi tra il 1987 ed oggi): l'ultimo è "Last Act Of Defiance", uscito nel 2014; e festeggiato il 30 Aprile 2016 il loro 30esimo anniversario di carriera esibendosi sul palco del Groezrock. Abbiamo incontrato Pete Koller (nelle foto 4, 6 e 7 di questo articolo), supertonico, denti più bianchi e splendenti mai visti prima, per una veloce intervista in esclusiva per Distorsioni nel bar del backstage al Groezrock.

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - Sick of it all: siete ancora “infastiditi da tutto”?

Pete Koller  (Sick Of It All) - Sì, quando guardo i notiziari, sai com’è, sono pieni di avvenimenti in giro per il mondo che superano ogni livello di tolleranza. Le persone non si capiscono tra loro e per forza c’è ancora motivo di esserlo (infastiditi da tutto)! Io sono davvero incazzato per queste cose! 

 

30 anni di carriera e 40 anni di punk, come ti fa stare?

Mi fa stare alla grande che una cosa che al tempo amavamo soltanto sia poi diventata una vera e propria carriera. Tutto ciò che facciamo è suonare, incontrare persone, viaggiare per il mondo e cose così. Mi fa stare molto bene che la gente in posti differenti nel mondo apprezzi ciò che facciamo e si scapicolli per venire a vederci. È davvero grandioso!

 

Ti senti punk?

Sì! Ovviamente! Non ho un capo. Faccio il cazzo che mi pare! Mi occupo di ciò che voglio io! Quindi non vorrei che nulla cambiasse e quindi va bene così.

 

Sei molto fortunato! E’ fortuna o punk?

È fortuna! È davvero difficile nella vita riuscire a fare qualcosa che ami profondamente. Tutto il mio impegno consiste nel pensare a nuove musiche, testi e cose come queste. È grandioso!

 

Lo scorso anno vi ho visti al Rebellion Festival e la vostra performance è stata ottima. Ho letto un pettegolezzo che diceva che non avreste suonato stasera! Quindi sì o no?

Certo che suoneremo! Saremo sul secondo palco intorno alle 10. Questo è il motivo per cui siamo qui!

 

Quanti anni avevi quando iniziasti la tua carriera?

Nel 1986 appena diplomatomi, intorno ai 16/17 anni, non ricordo di preciso ma credo più o meno in quel periodo.

 

Che radici familiari hai? Vieni da una famiglia di musicisti?

Siamo due fratelli che suonano entrambi nella stessa band (Lou il cantante ed io) mentre gli altri hanno lavori normali. Tutti dal proletariato, anche mia madre e mio padre. Ma tutti nella famiglia ci hanno sempre incoraggiati a fare ciò che stavamo facendo perché chiunque vorrebbe fare un lavoro che ama. Mia madre e mio padre e l’intera famiglia mi hanno sempre supportato. Mi dicevano: “vai avanti, vai avanti perché chiunque al mondo preferirebbe fare ciò che ama piuttosto che semplicemente svolgere un lavoro”. È come se a qualcuno piacesse fare del giardinaggio ma deve invece andarsene a fare un altro lavoro. Non sarebbe bello, bisognerebbe poter fare un lavoro perché lo si ama e non perché se ne ha bisogno.

 

Che tipo di musica ascolti?

Di tutto! Soprattutto ora. Ho una figlia di 4 anni e lei ascolta Taylor Swift pertanto anche io la ascolto, ma lei ama anche i Rancid, i Paramore e va piuttosto bene quindi. Io ascolto di tutto e lei pure. Noi ascoltiamo ogni nuova uscita.

 

Quale è la tua canzone preferita?

Difficile rispondere. Davvero non saprei. Adoro It’s A Wonderful Word di Louis Armstrong, una delle più grandi canzoni di sempre. È un brano bellissimo.

 

Cosa ne pensi del punk?

Fantastico! Amo la musica punk in genere perché è primitiva e non è necessario essere un gran musicista per suonarla anche perché nemmeno io sono un gran chitarrista. Se son riuscito a cavarne fuori 30 anni di carriera è abbastanza indicativo del fatto che quando iniziammo a vedere le band suonare ci dicemmo che proprio questa musica l’avremmo potuta fare anche noi, e semplicemente la facemmo, e siamo andati avanti da allora.

 

Progetti per il futuro? Incisioni?

Oh sì! Verso la fine dell’anno faremo uscire un voluminoso libro fotografico con le foto del nostro esordio e della nostra carriera. Avrà un vinile 10 pollici contenente 5 nuovi pezzi sul retrocopertina e la possibilità di scaricare i brani anche con un semplice download.

 

Quando pensi che sia avvenuto il passaggio dal suonare per divertimento al suonare per lavoro nella vostra carriera?

Bene, finalmente (la nostra carriera) ha avuto inizio! La scorsa notte abbiamo suonato ad Amburgo ed è stato divertentissimo! Non è stato “Oh no, devo suonare” ma c’era l’atmosfera di una festa in cui il pubblico si era caricato da ben due settimane e ciascuno era felice di essere proprio lì. La gente non era né aggressiva né violenta ma completamente matta, tutti cantavano ogni singola parola, sorridevano e ridevano. È stato divertente. Quindi direi che la nostra è una divertente carriera. Alcune notti stai tipo “ Oh nooo, 3 settimane di tour” e sei davvero stanco, ma subito cinque minuti prima di salire sul palco sei prontissimo a dare il culo per tutti i presenti che lavorano per l’intera settimana e vogliono divertirsi e non vogliono di certo assistere a gente che sale sul palco a recitare. Della serie: ci siamo dentro (nella carriera)? Ovviamente tutti noi abbiamo case da pagare, vite private, figli e cose varie. Quindi ciò che facciamo deve essere necessariamente un lavoro vero e proprio ma è proprio un gran lavoro! L’unica cosa che mi disturba davvero molto è che devo partire lasciando mia figlia di 4 anni che non capisce perché non possa venire.

 

Cosa pensi della differenza esistente tra la musica punk in America e in Europa?

Sembrerebbe che gli americani siano stati gli inventori di questo stile musicale e quando le band americane lo portano qui in Europa la gente li adora. È incredibile che, reduci da 3 settimane di tour in Europa, ogni nostro spettacolo abbia fatto il “tutto esaurito”. Assolutamente folle! Super apprezzati! Subito dopo abbiamo fatto 9 spettacoli nella West Coast della California ed è andata discretamente, insomma, è andata. È strano perché proveniamo da un posto (l’America) in cui la gente dice “Oh suonano i Sick Of It All, magari potrei andarci” ma qui in Europa appena esce l’evento su Internet, la gente, anche se mancano due settimane all’evento, compra il biglietto immediatamente. Non me lo spiego. È davvero strano. Di solito nel luogo dal quale la musica proviene, la gente è del tipo “let’s go”! Non so perché. Anche gli spettacoli a New York e nella East Coast sono stati ottimi qualche volta. Persino alcuni spettacoli nella West Coast sono stati buoni ma altri sono stati mediocri. In alcuni la gente è venuta e conosceva la musica, in altri no.

 

Che mi dici del Groezrock Festival?

È la sesta volta che ci suoniamo. Ci suoniamo da anni. È divertente e incontri qui tutti gli amici musicisti di band che non vedi da tantissimo tempo. È forte perché mentre abbiamo suonato nella West Coast siamo stati ospiti a casa di Dave dei Me first and the Gimme Gimmes durante il nostro giorno libero, e adesso lo abbiamo rivisto qui! La cosa più bella del punk e dell’hardcore è che si è tutti amici. Tutti noi musicisti delle band siamo come un’unica grande famiglia. Lo show di stasera sarà grandioso perché ci sono così tante persone che rincontreremo dopo tempo che non le abbiamo viste. Sarà bellissimo.

SICK OF IT ALL? …OF COURSE THERE’S SOMETHING TO BE!

Sick Of It All, american living legend hardcore punk band, was born in 1986 in New York and is now formed by bros Lou (voice) and Pete Koller (guitar), Armand Majidi (drums) and Craig Setari (bass). Never shyed away from they believe in, Sick of It All is still writing nowadays lyrics against American policy of wars and of restricing human rights, focusing on enviromental social and political aspects of the whole society controversies. Celebrating their 30 years Career Anniversary in a show here at Groezrock, I meet a supertonic and everseenmorewhiteteeth Pete Koller  in the bar of the artists’ backstage.

 

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - Sick of it all: are you still “sick of it all”?

Pete Koller  (Sick Of It All) - Yes, I mean when I watch the news, you know,  they’re still plenty of things to be highrate about what’s going on around us in the world. People might not understanding other people... of course there’s something to be ! I am really pist off about.

 

About  your 30 years of career and 40 years of punk, what do you feel about it ?

It feels great that something we loved became a career and this is all we do: it’s playing music and get to meet people, travel the world and all that. It’s really a pretty good feeling that people all over the world appreciate what we do and let’s skip doing to see us. It’s pretty great!

 

Do you feel punk?

Yep! Sure! I don’t have a boss. I do whatever fuck I want!! I look out whatever I want!! So I want tell any to change anything so it’s good.

 

You’re very lucky! Is this luck or punk?

It’s pretty lucky! It’s really hard to do something that you really love and that’s all you have to do is thinking new songs, lyrics and stuffs like that, it’s great!

 

Last year I have seen you in Rebellion Festival and it was a great prformance. Are you playing or not tonight? Because I‘ve read a rumor you weren’t playing tonight ! So, yes or no?

Yes of course we play! We will be on the second stage tonight around 10 p.m. That’s why we are here!

 

How old were you when you started your career?

In 1986  I just graduate in High School, when I was 16/17, I don’t know exactly but something like that.

 

What’s your family background? Are they in the music ?

We are  two brothers players in the band and he is the singer, the others have regular jobs. They are working class people, my mother and my father too, but they are always saying just keep doing what you are doing because everyone would love to do that. My mum and dad and family always supported me,” keep doing keep doing, because everyone in the world will love just to do what they love, instead of just having a job". It’s like someone likes planting gardens but they have to go to work. It’s not good, so they need to do what we are doing as well, what we love than we need to do it.

 

What kind of music do you listen to?

Everything! Exspecially now I have a 4 years old daughter and she listens to Terror Swift so that’s mean I listen to it as well but also she loves Rancid, she loves Paramore also, so it’s pretty good.  I listen to everything and she does as well. We pretty listen to everything has out.

 

What’s your favourite song ?

Well, that’s hard to say. I really don’t know. I love It’s A Wonderful Word  from Louis Armstrong, one of the greatest song ever. It’s a great song.

 

What do you think about punk?

It’s great! Punk music in general I love it because it’s primal and you don’t have to be such a great musician to play because I am not a great guitar player at all but I was able to make a 30 years career out of it, that’s pretty cool because when we started seeing bands’ playing, we were thinking we could do that too, so we just did it and carrying on.

 

Projects for the future? Recording?

Oh yeah! Later this year we will release a new big book, a photo book. It’s the beginning of us, all career photos, and in the back of the book there’s gonna be a 10 inch vynil of 5 new songs and also get a digital download as well.

 

When do you think there was the passage from playing for fun and playing for job in your career?

Well, it definetely started ! Last night we played in a show in Hamburg and  it was so much fun. It wasn’t like “Fuck! I have to play”, but it was the atmosphere of a party and everybody in the crowd was load for two weeks already and everybody was so happy to be there. It wasn’t tough gay, it wasn’t violent but people was absolutely crazy, everybody were singing every word and smiling and laughing. It was fun. So it’s a fun career!

Some nights you are like “Oh nooo, 3 weeks of a tour”. You’re really tired but as soon as 5 minutes before playing, you are like and ready to give hole because everybody in the crowd they want to work all week and they want to have fun and they don’t want to see people just acting out there. It’s like  we are into it? I mean, obviously now we all have houses to pay for, we have all independence life and children and stuff. So has to be a job and it’s a great job you know! Only sucks because I have to go away and my daughter is only 4 years old and she doesn’t understand why can’t I go.

 

What do you think about the difference between America and Europe punk music?

It seems that Americans are the inventors of styles of music and when the Americans bands bring it here people love it. It’s really strange we just did 3 weeks european tour and every show was sold out. Absolutely insane! Super appreciated! Then we did 9 shows in the West Coast in California and it was ok. It’s strange because where we came from people are like «Oh Sick Of It All are playing, well, I might go » but here it’s like they see us on Internet and they buy straight away a ticket I am going no matter what. It’s really strange.  It’s like  where in the music comes from, people are like let's go! I don’t know what is it. I means shows in New York are still great and east coast. Certain shows on our tour on West Coast were great but some were yeah it’s all right. People come to stand around, playing all songs, others not.

 

What about Groezrock Festival ?

It’s about six times playing here. We’ve been playing here for years. It’s fun and you get to meet all your friends that are in bands that you haven’t seeing then for a long time. It’s strange because on the West Coast Tour we stayed at Dave from Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, at his house, we had a day off and now he is here. Strange ! The cool thing about punk and hardcore is that people in bands is friend. It’s like a big family. The show gonna be great tonight because there are so many people we haven’t seen for a while so gonna be good.

 

Is Punk dead?

No,it’s just getting older like a fine wine just gets better.
