Stagnant Pools EMOZIONI SHOEGAZE (ITALIAN/ENGLISH VERSION)

stagnant pools distorsioni

Speriamo migliorandoci come band e scrivendo canzoni migliori.

 INTERVIEW WITH STAGNANT POOLS

Stagnant PoolsStagnant Pools is a young band from Indiana formed by the two Enas brothers, their debut album “Temporary Room" was released by Polyvinyl Records and shows an hypnotic, dark sound, knocking down the listener with a noise rock of Sonic Youth derivation, but declined according to the canons of shoegaze and the hopeless, pessimistic vision of Joy Division. We just had, thanks to their label, the opportunity to ask them a few questions. (Ignazio Gulotta)

Ignazio Gulotta (Distorsioni): First of all, thank you for this interview, the first thing I'd like to ask is “why this choice of a duo?”

Stagnant Pools: We never affirmatively decided to be a duo.  We started writing songs and the two of us were the only ones at the time that we knew who played an instrument and was into what the music sounded like.

I assume one of the points of working together with your brother is like being in a team; so how do your songs come out and how important how their lyrics?

Usually songs will start with a guitar part or a chord progression and then the drums come in along with adjustments to the song structure, based on how we feel the song should be in length and/or sound.  The lyrics are very important to the songs and are also the hardest part of the songwriting because they have to feel right and fit with the music in each song.

"Temporary Room" shows strength and deep emotional impact, and it could be compared to a live performance; was it your choice or was it dictated by need, instead?

If the question is asking about the recording process, then it was by need that we had to record it in one day because of financial restrictions.  But we wanted to make the record regardless of whether it was in a studio or self-produced.  The idea of recording in the studio just seemed to be the right move because we felt the songs we good enough.

For your music reference is commonly made to shoegaze, and to Joy Division-like bands as well, do you recognize yourselves in such a description?

We can't deny that our sound is resonant of those bands but we do not approach songwriting with the conscious notion of sounding like them in mind.  We play the kind of music that we think sounds good and that we enjoy making.

Stagnant PoolsIs the name you chose an indication of your musical style as well?

The name of the band came when we were starting out and it just seemed to fit.  We didn't try to write music that fit the band name, we just picked it and went with it.

In my review I wrote that your music is the perfect soundtrack to new generations facing the future with no hope to improve their lives, (do you recognize yourselves in this reading?) how do you feel about this sensation of mine?

Everyone may feel different things when they listen to our record, there is no right or wrong way to feel about it.  It's great to feel emotions though when listening to a music, or rather to have the music invoke within you a certain emotion.

You followed university studies in literature and philosophy, did they affect your songs? Is there any writer or philosopher to whom you feel very close to?

We both enjoyed academia, we can't say for sure though if our studies directly influenced our songs.  We both have writers that we like but its hard to say if we are "close" to any of them.

Tell us about your musical background before Stagnant Pools was formed.

We both played in a 5-piece indie band in high school, Doug played drums and I played bass guitar, so we had some experience playing together before Stagnant Pools.  I didn't start learning guitar however, until I got into college.

You are very young and therefore part of the digital generation, what is your relationship, both as musicians and as listeners, with physical and digital music media?

We like physical copies of music and we both buy and listen to LPs.  We were very fortunate and excited to have our record pressed onto vinyl.  We both have iPod's as well, to take with us on the road or when we are not at home and able to listen to vinyl; we aren't purists or anything in that sense, like we only listen to vinyl.  Digital music is fine because you can take it with you but downloading music creates a huge financial crush to most bands and there does not seem like a way of stopping people from downloading your music.  That makes it like a double-edged sword.

Stagnant PoolsHow do you think music of Stagnant Pools will evolve in the future?

Hopefully we will continue to get better as a band and write better songs; it would be nice if we could continue to challenge ourselves with the songwriting process and grow as musicians and as individuals.

Thanks and let’s hope to see you soon in Italy.

Thank you very much, we hope to have the opportunity to come to Italy!
