Vibrators, vera leggenda vivente del punk rock inglese hanno celebrato con un tour europeo, dal 14 Gennaio al 14 Febbraio 2016, i loro 40 anni di onorata carriera e fatto tappa con tre date in Italia: noi siamo stati alla prima a Piacenza, al Circolo Arci Sound Bonico, il 23 Gennaio 2016.

 

UN PO' DI STORIA -  Vibrators nascono nel  febbraio 1976, esordendo come supporters degli Stranglers e dei Sex Pistols, partecipando anche al 100 Club Punk Rock Festival. Nel novembre dello stesso anno debuttano con il singolo We Vibrate e suonano con il chitarrista Chris Spedding (in auge nel 1975 con il suo singolo Motor Bikin’) nel singolo Pogo Dancing. All’inizio del 1977 sono la band di apertura nel tour britannico di Iggy Pop (con David Bowie alle tastiere), escono con il singolo Baby Baby subito seguito dal loro primo ottimo album “Pure Mania”, che segna immediatamente ed indelebilmente la scena punk rock inglese. È nel 1978, con il secondo album “V2”, che la band si consacra definitivamente nella scena rock internazionale. Da quel momento la line-up inizia a disgregarsi più volte e a riformarsi, ciascun membro inizia una carriera solista e/o suonando in altre band; nonostante ciò la band produce due singles nel 1980, Gimme some lovin' e Disco in Mosco… e si scioglie nuovamente.

Si riformano nel 1982 con ancora numerosi cambi di formazione, sempre però con belle produzioni di punk e New Wave. Dal 1996 Darrel Bath (chitarra, ex UK Subs, Crybabies, Dogs d’amour) si unisce alla formazione ma è solo nel 2003 che ai membri fondatori Knox (voce e chitarra) ed Eddie Edwards (batteria) si aggiunge Pete Honkamaki (basso, ex No Direction, nella prima foto di questa intervista su a sinistra). Suonano come band di supporto per il tour britannico ed europeo degli UK Subs: da quel momento la formazione trova stabilità e prosegue la sua produzione fino ai giorni nostri. L'originario frontman Knox si esibisce con la band solo nelle grandi occasioni, come riportato nell'intervista. Nel 2014 è uscito l’album “Punk Mania: back to the Roots”, un vero e proprio ritorno delle leggende del punk rock al loro splendore: 14 tracce di inner old school punk rock!!  

 

L’INTERVISTA

 

La band, tuttora formata da Darrell Bath (chitarra), Eddie Edwards (batteria), Pete Honkamaki (basso) (da sinistra a destra nella foto) è in tour e stasera è sul palco del Sound Bonico di Piacenza. Li incontro, in esclusiva per Distorsioni webmagazine, nel backstage. I tre sono subito molto disponibili e hanno voglia di raccontarsi, vado subito alle domande…

 

 

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - 40 anni di carriera: quale ricordo conservate come band?

Eddie Edwards: Tanti ricordi, ma soprattutto tanto divertimento, divertimento e divertimento.

Pete Honkamaki: Ricordo il pubblico, le facce delle persone durante i tour, le emozioni sul palco, le vibrazioni che mi sono arrivate dal pubblico, sempre diverse in ogni luogo in cui abbiamo suonato.

Darrell Bath: A me sono rimaste impresse le piccole cose, gli odori dei luoghi, le piccole stanze degli hotel, i paesaggi lungo gli spostamenti nel tour.

 

The Vibrators: come nasce questo nome?

Eddie (foto a destra): Suonava bene!!! Era un nome facile da ricordare, d’effetto.

 

Nulla a che vedere con altro?

Eddie: Vibratori?? No, in alcun modo…

Darrell: Mi dispiace per le donne ma no, in alcun modo!! (dicono ridendo)

 

Una delle vostre prime uscite discografiche è stato il "7 “Pogo Dancing” insieme a Chris Spedding: come nasce questo brano, cos’era il Pogo nel '76?

Eddie: Si suonava in locali molto piccoli e pieni di gente e lo spazio era limitato, ci si spingeva per avvicinarsi al palco e capitava sempre che le persone cadessero ed immediatamente venissero risollevate dagli astanti lì vicini. Era un continuo cadere e rialzarsi, cadere e rialzarsi… tanto che divenne l’unica modalità per vedere un concerto in quegli anni… e divenne un ballo! Era bello, divertente perché bisognava sempre essere pronti sia a cadere che a raccogliere qualcuno da terra… lo ricordo con tanto divertimento…

 

Vi aspettate del pogo questa sera durante il gig?

Eddie: Non so sinceramente cosa aspettarmi questa sera; è la nostra prima data italiana, non saprei, dipende dal pubblico, però, sì, spero un bel pogo, che la gente si diverta e partecipi.

 

Molti vostri brani sono stati definiti antesignani del genere garage, concordate con questa definizione?

Eddie: Non del tutto. Il Garage nasce nel 1964, molto prima dei Vibrators ed era già molto conosciuto come genere e non solo nel Regno Unito.

Darrell (foto a destra): Di genere garage noi avevamo solo i luoghi nei quali suonavamo, decisamente dei garage dove ci ritrovavamo a Londra. Da questo punto di vista devo dire che sì, siamo un gruppo garage, decisamente!

 

Cos’è il punk per voi?

Eddie: Solo musica.

Darrell: Uno stile di vita non convenzionale, non mainstream.

Pete: Un modo di pensare. Se pensiamo al punk come genere musicale dobbiamo far riferimento solo al 76/77 e dopo quella data il punk non esisteva già più, era finito, ed oggi possiamo definirlo una moda. Musicalmente come genere è un grande ombrello che abbraccia gruppi dal '76 in poi, anche fino ai giorni nostri e che mette insieme anche i Rancid e i Greenday, pur nella loro diversità storica e di stile. Se ci riferiamo invece al punk  come mentalità, come stato mentale, allora dal '76 in poi il punk è un concetto che non tramonta, perché il punk è qualcosa che sta nelle persone, che comprende anche un modo non convenzionale e non mainstream di vivere.

 

Voi vi sentite punk?

Eddie: Sì, certo.

Darrell: Si, sotto ogni punto di vista.

Pete: Sì, soprattutto perché il mio stile di vita è punk. Nel Settembre del 1980 ricordo che andai via dalla Finlandia, caricai tutto sul mio furgone e partii senza un piano, senza una meta, senza un’idea precisa di ciò che avrei fatto. Arrivai a Londra e ho vissuto negli squats, poi a casa di amici, in alcuni periodi anche dentro il mio van. Conobbi persone e iniziai a suonare e quindi il punk per me è uno stile di vita che comprende un modo di pensare, di agire, è anche il mio lavoro. Ho suonato con tanti gruppi inglesi, con gli UK Subs per esempio, e poi sono arrivato ai Vibrators. Non ho una vita mainstream e mi sento punk.

 

Trovate molta differenza tra il punk inglese e quello americano?

Eddie: Sì, c’è uno stile musicale molto differente; la lirica, i suoni, il modo di arrangiare i brani.

Darrell: Il punk americano è tecnicamente più preciso e professionale. In America il mercato musicale del punk è molto più ricco, si spende molto per i concerti che si tengono in grandi spazi. I musicisti americani sono molto professionali, sono preparati tecnicamente, guadagnano molto.

Pete: C’è un modo differente di suonare tra America e Inghilterra, un approccio diverso. Esiste lo UK Sounding che è uno stile che caratterizza la musica britannica, fatto di accordi, di arrangiamenti e di stili compositivi. La musica non è precisa, è meno raffinata, a volte i suoni sono più sporchi.

Darrell: Inoltre il punk inglese è fatto da persone che si conoscono tra loro, il punk è una grande famiglia di musicisti che collaborano tra loro, che hanno progetti comuni, una grande famiglia nella quale ci si supporta.

 

La formazione dei Vibrators è cambiata tante volte. Dal 2003 suonate insieme e sembra che ci sia stabilità, è così o ci saranno cambiamenti?

Eddie: La formazione attuale è così da tanti anni e siamo molto affiatati. Io sono il membro storico che ha portato avanti la band. Knox (vero nome Ian Carnochan, nella foto a sinistra) è l’altro membro storico e suona con noi solo in Inghilterra. Sarà presente il 27 febbraio al concerto alla Islington Academy a Londra e sarà lui il cantante.

Pete: Quando Knox è presente è lui il cantante. Quando siamo invece noi tre e Knox è assente, cantiamo tutti insieme, come era nei Vibrators delle origini e si cantava tutti insieme.

 

Il vostro ultimo album “Punk Mania: Back to the Roots”. In cosa consiste il vostro ritorno alle origini?

Eddie: L’idea dell’album è partita dai discografici che ci hanno chiesto di riproporre lo stile dei Vibrators del '76, un ritorno al nostro stile delle origini, al modo di suonare, ai testi…

Pete: E’ stato molto bello entrare in sala di registrazione  immediatamente dopo aver scritto i pezzi, così come si faceva nel '76. I brani non sono studiati ma semplicemente ideati e subito registrati: pochi accordi, tanta immediatezza, l’uso della drum machine. Di old style c’è stato il momento compositivo, l’immediatezza, di nuovo, i brani composti. E' stata una bellissima esperienza.

Darrell: E’ stata un’esperienza musicale punk old style e i produttori ci hanno incoraggiato a seguire questa linea, siamo soddisfatti sia del modo che del risultato. Il titolo ricalca il vecchio Pure Mania.

 

Progetti per il futuro?

Eddie: Il tour del 40esimo, un nuovo LP l’anno prossimo, il ritorno in Giappone dal quale manchiamo da 15 anni. Saremo  anche al 20th Rebellion Festival.

 

 

È ora di iniziare il concerto, li ringrazio e li saluto. I tre mi guardano stupiti e mi chiedono dispiaciuti se davvero ho finito l’intervista.

Eddie: Nothing else? Next, please!

Darrell: Finished?

Pete: Oh, gosh! Is it finished? No more questions?

 

Il tempo è passato molto velocemente ed è stata davvero una piacevole esperienza conoscere questa band che ha attraversato 40 anni di carriera, ancora ‘up and running’, inossidabili e grintosi, molto friendly. Let’s Vibrate on stage!! 

 

Al Sound Bonico sono The Nuts, band piacentina (foto a destra), ad aprire il concerto dei Vibrators. In stile pop-punk suonano pochi pezzi, uno con la presenza di Vaster dei The Ferrets, e scaldano l’atmosfera.

È il momento dei Vibrators! Sono grandiosi! Propongono l’intero repertorio dei loro quarant’anni di carriera da R.U. T. C.  fino a Baby Baby, fanno anche una cover dei Sonic che è molto apprezzata dal pubblico. Sono molto coinvolgenti e Pete ricorda Joe Strummer, in una serata di vero punk rock inglese della vecchia scuola. Davvero bravi!!

The Vibrators, a truly alive English punk rock legend, celebrate their 40 years of honorable career by an European Tour from Jan 14th to Feb 14th. They arrive in Italy for three days and the first date is at Sound Bonico live Club in Piacenza. Who are the
Vibrators?!

 

A STORY - They formed in 1976 and their first gig was supporting The Stranglers. They supported the Sex Pistols and they were one of the band playing at the 100 Club Punk Rock Festival; the debut single We Vibrate came out on November of the same year and then they played as a support band in the Chris Spedding’s (popular for Motor Bikin’ from 1975) new single Pogo Dancin’. Early in 1977 they were the supporting band of Iggy Pop with David Bowie on keyboards) Uk tour and it came out the single Baby baby, followed by their first album «Pure Mania», a LP that signed immediately English punk rock old school. In 1978 the band with the second LP « V2 », definetly rise up the international rock scene. From that time the band started changing the line – up many times and meanwhile each member starts his own solo career or playing in other bands.  They released two singles Gimme some lovin' and  Disco in Mosco… but they spit again!

In 1982 the original line up was reformed and many other changes too. They toured regularly and released many new songs, always very good Punk and Wave. From 1986 Darrel Bath (ex UK Subs, Crybabies, Dogs d’amour) join the original line – up but only from 2003 Pete Honkamaki (ex No Direction) arrived as bass player. The band is still formed by Eddie Edwards, original member, drummer and voice, Darrel Bath, guitar and voice, Pete, bass and voice. They are touring together and tonight are on stage.

 

INTERVIEW WITH THE VIBRATORS

 

I meet Darrell Bath, Eddie Edwards and Pete Honkamaki (photo, from the left to the right) in the backstage of Sound Bonico Live Club, Piacenza (Italy). The three are no wasting so much time willing to tell about themselves in a friendly way, easy to approach and available to speak …so we are going straight to the questions...

 

 

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni) - 40 years of career: which is your past memory you save deep on yourselves ?

Eddie Edwards: Lots of memories… but overall fun, fun, fun!

Pete Honkamaki: I remember the publics, people’s faces during tours, stages emotions, vibes from people, always different in each places where we had a gig

Darrell Bath: I remember the little things, smell of places, small hotel’s rooms, countryside along the way moving from a venue to another during  tour

 

The Vibrators : why this name?

Eddie: It sounded good!! Easy to remember, of impact!

 

Nothing else?

Eddie: Vibrators?? No, nothing else! - Darrell: Sorry for women but no, nothing else ( they both say it laughing)

 

One of your first releasing was the 7” “Pogo Dancing" with Chris Spedding, what was pogo in 1976?

Eddie: We played in small places but full of people and places were limited; people tried to come near the stage and it happened that people fall down they fall down and immediatly others helped standing you up. It was a repeatedly down and up, down and up, down and up … and it was the only way to survive in a punk gig of those years… and it became a dance! It was funny, you had to be always ready to fall down and help standing gisers up from the ground… I remember I enjoyed that time.

 

Do you aspect a pogo dance tonight ?

Eddie: I don’t know; it’s our first italian date, I don’t know, it depends on the public, but, yes, I hope people come and have fun.

 

Many of your songs are labeled as “garage”, do you agree with this?

Eddie: Not at all. Garage was born in 1964, many years before the Vibrators and it was very popular in Uk and in the world.

Darrell (photo on the left):  Garage was the only place where we played, and that was a real garage in London. On this point of view we are a garage band, really!

 

What is punk for you?

Eddie: Just music.

Darrell: An unconventional way of life, not mainstream.

Pete: A state of mind.  If we speak about music we have to see only at  76/77 because after that time punk was finished. Today punk is just fashion. In music it joins bands from 76 till nowadays, so you can speak about Rancid as a punk band but also about the Greenday you could say the same, even if they’re more pop, they are different in style and history. If we think at punk as a state of mind, from 76 punk in something in your head, an unconventional and not mainstream way of life.

 

Do you feel punk?

Eddie: Yes.

Darrell: Yes, definitely.

Pete: Yes, my way of life is punk. In september 1980  I leaved Finland, everythings packed in the van, i went away without a plan, without any idea of what it could happen. I have arrived in London, living in squats, then by friends, sometimes in my van. I knew people and I started playing. Punk for me is a way of life and it concerns the way I think, the way I live and my job, too. I don’t live mainstream and I feel myself punk.

 

Which is the diffence between English and American punk?

Eddie: Music style is different: lyrics, sounds, arrangements…

Darrell: American punk is precise, technical and professional. In America, punk music is  richer than the English one, people pay lots of money  for concerts. Gigs are hold in big venues. American players are very professional, their performance is very good in technical and they basicly earn much more than English players.

Pete: There’s a very different way of playing punk in England than in America, it’s a different approach. The “UK Sounding” is a style that caracterizes briths music, done of different accords, arrangements and compositional style: something that you recognizes as British. Music is not precise, it’s less refined, and sometimes sounds are « dirty ». Music is not just pure business.

Darrell:  English Punk is done of people that are connecting to each other, it’s like a big family! Musicians work together, they share common projects, we support each other.

 

Vibrators’ line up has changed many times but from 2003 you three have been in a sort of stability. Is it true or isn’t it ?

Eddie: the present line up is stable and we are rehearsed. I am the original member who brought forward the band. Knox (photo on the left) is the other original member and he plays with us only in special occasions in England. He doesn’t do  tours outside England. He will be with us on February 27Th at the Islington Academy in London.

Pete: when Knox is on stage, he is the only singer. Otherwise  all of us three sing, as in Vibrator’s roots.

 

"Punk Mania: back to the roots". What does it mean «back to the roots »?

Eddie: The suggestion of the album came from the record makers. They’ve asked us  to go back to 76 Vibrator’s style, back to the origins, to our style, to our lyrics and identity.

Pete: It was great recording immediately  after composing a song, as in the past.  Our songs weren’t studied, just a quick creative moment, approaching a piece just two or three times, throw it without thinking too much. Designed and ready to record: few chords, lot of immediacy and the use of drum machine. It was a stunning experience.

Darrell:  It has been an old style punk music experience and the record makers have encouraged us to follow the old line. We are satisfied  of the way and of the results we are having. The title remarks the old Pure Mania.

 

Projects for the future?

Eddie: Well, we are doing our 40th anniversary tour in Europe and a tour worldwide. We are planning  a new album for next year. We will go back to Japan after 15 years.  Also we will be performed at the 20th Rebellion Festival.

 

Now time has arrived to play!  I thank them and say goodbye but they looked at me surprised:

Eddie: Nothing else? Next, please!

Darrell: Finished?

Pete: Oh, gosh! Is it finished? No more question?

 

Time passed by really quickIy  and it has been a pleasure meeting this 40 years career’s band. They are still up and running, very friendly and still on punk.  Hey guys, let’s vibrate on stage!

 

    

At Soundbonico The Nuts (on the left), a local band, are opening the performance. Their style is typical poppunk. Few songs, one featured with Vaster of The Ferrets, warm up the club.

Then The Vibrators! They’re great! They’re performed all the 40 years career songs from Rip up the city to Baby Baby , including also a very appreciated Sonic’s cover. Their impact is trasporting and Pete looks like Joe Strummer, a truly punk rock English style night.
