Nick Halliwell è il Deus Ex Machina del progetto Granite Shore e quando ha inviato i demos al chitarrista dei Distractions, Mr. Steve Perrin, si è sentito rispondere che mai lui avrebbe suonato in un concept album. Dopo tanti anni di antagonismo, non si sarebbe certo trasformato in un dinosauro del rock. Ma Nick, intellettuale di rango e raffinato, avrà argomentato le proprie idee in modo convincente e coinvolgente, perché ha raccolto attorno a sé alcuni tra i musicisti più interessanti e funzionali del panorama indie. Phil Wilson, abitualmente canta e suona la chitarra nei fantastici June Brides, Martin Bramah è chitarrista di importanza tale che quasi non si riesce a spiegare. Basti dire che con The Fall, alla fine degli anni settanta, ha riscritto la grammatica dello strumento. In seguito con i magnifici Blue Orchids. Mike Kellie, glorioso batterista  di Spooky Tooth e di Only Ones! Un super gruppo indie, senza l'ego che caratterizzò quelli degli anni settanta, per dirla con le parole di Phil Wilson, che ha realizzato un concept album sulla vita di una band e dei suoi rapporti col pubblico.

Nick precisa, fieramente, che si tratta di prog rock, ma dimenticatevi barocchismi e sfide tecniche, perché qui siamo in territorio Canterbury e, non ce ne vorrà Nick, molte volte la sua voce, espressiva, dandy e pastosa, ci ha ricordato il giovane Kevin Ayers con reminiscenze à la Phil Wilson. Stiamo parlando di musicisti indie della nidiata C-86 che, pur nella loro versatilità, mantengono il proprio DNA  ed allora è  prog rock molto sui generis, come lo suonerebbero Teardrop Explodes e Pale Fountain. Senza raccontare troppo della sinapsi, per non rovinarvi il piacere della lettura, diciamo che è la storia di un gruppo che ha realizzato una manciata di canzoni importanti a livello locale, il cui cantante intraprende la carriera solista e poi, a seguito della crisi del mercato discografico, è costretto a rivedere le proprie priorità e decide, dopo trentacinque anni, di riformare la band. Nick ha meditato per circa un anno su cosa scrivere, ma una volta chiaro l'obiettivo ha composto il tutto nel giro di due mesi, alla fine del 2013, anche se due canzoni, The Management e Recorded Sound, sono state composte all'inizio del 2014, quando lo studio era stato già prenotato.

Il concept può anche essere considerato una metafora dell'invecchiare e di come quando siamo giovani vogliamo cambiare il mondo, ma poi, al raggiungimento della mezza età vorremmo tornare ai tempi che furono. Si tratta di sentimenti connaturati alla vecchiaia, a quell'età in cui il passato è più ampio del futuro che ci aspetta. "Once More From The Top" non è un album nostalgico, ma calato  nei nostri giorni e non autobiografico, anche se Nick descrive vividamente le situazioni che vive una band on the road e si  percepisce che le ha vissute, come quando ci racconta di dormire sul pavimento anziché sul letto e comunque descrive  bene gli alti e bassi di stare in un gruppo. E' un lavoro coraggioso, perché in un periodo dove tutta la musica è completamente disponibile ed ascoltata distrattamente, un album che richieda  attenzione viene ad essere  un manifesto politico. E' un disco da ascoltare una domenica pomeriggio, nella tiepida campagna inglese, sorseggiando una buona tazza di tea, leggendo i testi all'interno delle meravigliose copertine (diverse per LP e CD), respirando il profumo del cartone e del vinile, ricordando di quando i dischi si acquistavano in un negozio.

Nick Halliwell is the Deus Ex Machina of the project Granite Shore and when he sent the demos to  Distractions guitar player, Mr. Steve Perrin, he was told that he wouldn't have never played in a concept album. After so many years of antagonism, he would certainly become a dinosaur rock. But Nick, intellectual rank and refined, have argued their ideas convincingly and addictive, because it has gathered around him some of the most interesting musicians of the indie scene.

Phil Wilson, usually sings and plays guitar in the wonderful June Brides, guitarist Martin Bramah is of such importance that almost no one can explain. Suffice to say that with The Fall, at the end of the seventies, rewrote the grammar of the instrument. Later with the magnificent Blue Orchids. Mike Kellie ... drummer of Spooky Tooth and Only Ones!

A super indie band, without the ego that did characterize those of the seventies, to quote the words of Phil Wilson, who created a concept album about the life of a band and its relations with the public. Nick precise, proudly, that it's prog rock, but forget baroquisms and technical challenges, because here we are in Canterbury territory, Nick's voice, expressive, dandy and pasty, reminded, sometimes, the young Kevin Ayers with reminiscence à la Phil Wilson. We're talking about indie musicians of  C-86 generation that, despite their versatility, retain their DNA and then it is  prog rock with indie attitude, as it would sound Teardrop Explodes and Pale Fountain.

Without telling too much of the synapses, not to spoil the pleasure of reading, we can say that it is the story of a group that has made a handful of songs locally important, whose singer embarks on a solo career and then, following the crisis of the recording industry is forced to review their priorities and decide, after thirty years, of reform the band.
Nick has meditated for about a year on what to write, but once he had clear the objective, almost all the songs were written within two months, at the end of 2013, although two songs, The Management and Recorded Sound, were composed at the beginning of 2014, when the studio was booked already. The concept can also be seen as a metaphor of aging and how when we are young we want to change the world, but then, on reaching middle age, we would like to return to the days that were.

These feelings inherent to old age, that age in which the past is larger than the future that awaits us. "Once More From The Top"  is not a nostalgic album, but fell in our days and not autobiographical, although Nick vividly describes the situations that lives a band on the road. It percepisc which he lived, as when he tells us to sleep on the floor instead of on the bed and still well describes the ups and downs of being in a group. It 'a courageous work, because in a period where all the music is completely available and listened distractedly, an album that requires attention is to be a political manifesto. It 'a record to be played on a Sunday afternoon, in warm English countryside, sipping a good cup of tea, reading the texts within the wonderful sleeves (different for LP and CD), breathing in the scent of cardboard and vinyl reminding of when discs you bought at the store.
