Druid sono uno dei segreti meglio custoditi della scena Heavy Psych. Con questo album d’esordio s'inseriscono nella recente mutazione del genere che prevede, accanto al canonico suono fuzzy ed effetti echo, venature glam e digressioni progressive. Il loro stile è originale e strutturato, con reminescenze stoner, doom, trippy e blues evoluto. Un gruppo sperimentale con licenza di ridefinire il paradigma musicale del genere. Il power trio di Athens, OH é circondato da un alone di mistero e, appena dopo un anno dalla costituzione, sono entrati in studio col proprio bagaglio di chitarre primordiali, misticismo, astrologia, le lezioni di Tommy Iommi e Jimmy Page scolpite in mente ed hanno realizzato un lavoro sorprendente per qualità e maturità. Il disco è stato prodotto dalle abili mani di Greg Ornella, agli Studi RTV dell'Ohio University di Athens. Il suono è compatto, definito con precisione e privo di sbavature, eccessi o autocompiacimenti. Questi Psych Dudes ricercano la sperimentale espansione della mente utilizzando vecchi abbecedari di ardite commistioni e digressioni psichedeliche, stile primissimi Pink Floyd, che s'inerpicano su robuste tessiture di chitarre ossianiche.

Percorrono quella strada con gusto e senza mai farsi sopraffare dai suoni, al riparo dalle facili trappole degli stereotipi del genere. Sono padroni della materia incandescente che producono simili a Signori delle maree laviche. Anche quando le atmosfere si fanno smaccatamente Sabbath/Zeppelin/Deep Purple, i Druid sono misurati e non si limitano a interpretare gli stilemi dei gruppi originari, ma ne metabolizzano i suoni realizzandone l'attualizzazione, quasi re-invenzione.  Se in Moonlight in Ares sembra echeggiare l'anima folk-ish dei Led Zeppelin, in realtà la sua evoluzione non si risolve in una stanca riproposizione di formule logore, ma, anche quando l'atmosfera s'irrobustisce per poi tornare a climi pastorali, si ha la sensazione di assistere alla creazione d'idee nuove scaturenti da consanguinei della stessa congiunzione astrale. Roots & Beings apre con arpeggi e riffs mutuati da Voodoo Child per proseguire con piglio di urticante urgenza, alternate a dinamiche ed armonie tipici dei gruppi glam più proletari. A volte il fuzz è veramente molto presente, ma stemperato da breaks di psichedelia all'incenso della West Coast, con cori che si perdono nei gorghi del metallo, per poi riemergere a stemperare l'atmosfera.

In Mushroom Fields-Luke's Wall non si limitano ad interpretare l'outro di War Pigs dei Black Sabbath, ma la vivono, riposizionando il mood del brano dove, forse, avrebbe dovuto essere dall'inizio. No Good Man è un blues filtrato dall'esperienza grunge, suonato con una classe che mai è stata vista dalle parti di Seattle, quasi con un tocco magico à la Clapton. I Druid sono padroni del furore sonico e il fuzz insiste in brani come Rid This From My Eyes. Ma non hanno timore a mostrare il loro lato romantico e delicato, come nella dolcezza psichedelica di Whale dove si ricorre ai preziosi segreti della sala di registrazione degli ultimissimi Doors per supportare una tessitura di armonie care a David Gilmour. Il brano di chiusura, Mount Sinjar/Evil Sands, entra di diritto tra le meraviglie soniche, con i Druid che sembrano posseduti dagli spiriti di Deep Purple e Black Sabbath, persi in un vortice di colorati stati mentali. I Druid non rimarranno un segreto ancora per molto.

Druid is one of the best kept secrets of the Heavy Psych scene. With the self-titled debut album recently become part of the mutation of the kind that includes, besides the canonical fuzzy sound and echo effects, grain glam and progressive digressions. Their sound is original and structured, with stoner, doom  and evolved trippy blues reminiscences.  An experimental group with a license to redefine the paradigm  of the musical genre. The power  Trio  from Athens, OH is surrounded by an aura of mystery and, just one year after their constitution, entered the studio with their wealth of primordial guitars, mysticism and astrology, the lessons of  Tommy Iommi and Jimmy Page carved in mind and they  has made an amazing job for quality and maturity. The disc was produced by the skilled hands of Greg Ornella, at Local Education RTV Ohio University in Athens. The sound is compact, precisely defined and free of burrs, excesses or complacency. These Psych Dudes seek the experimental expansion of the mind, using older dictionaries of artists of daring scheme and digressions in psychedelic, early Pink Floyd style, climbing a solid textures of ossianic  guitars. 

They walk that road without ever being overwhelmed by the sounds, away from the easy traps of stereotypes of the genre. Even when the atmosphere became more blatantly Sabbath/Zeppelin/Deep Purple, the Druid are always measured and not merely interpret the style of the original groups, but metabolize it,  coming  to their discounting,  almost re-invention. If in Moonlight Ares seems to echo in the soul of folk-ish  Led Zeppelin, in fact its construction is not solved in a tired repetition of formulas worn but, even when the atmosphere increase,  then return to pastoral climates, it has the feeling of assisting the creation of new ideas arising from blood relatives of the same alignment of the stars. Roots & Beings opens with arpeggios and riffs borrowed from Voodoo Child to continue stinging air of urgency, alternating dynamics and harmonies typical of the groups most glam proletarians. Sometimes the fuzz is very much present, but tempered by breaks of psychedelia  from  West Coast incense, with choruses that are lost in the eddies of the metal, and then re-emerge to soften the atmosphere.

In Mushroom Fields-Luke's Wall do not just interpret the outro of War Pigs by Black Sabbath, but just live it, repositioning the mood of the song where, perhaps, should have been from the beginning. No Good Man is a filtered experience grunge blues, played with a class that has never been seen around Seattle, almost with the magic touch à la Clapton. Druid are masters of the sonic fury and the fuzz is insisting on tracks like Rid This From My Eyes, but not afraid to show their romantic and delicate side, like the psychedelic sweetness of Whale where they  resort to the precious secrets of the recording studio of the latest Doors to support a weaving harmonies dear to David Gilmour. The closing track, Mount Sinjar/Evil Sands, goes right through the wonders sonic with the Druid who seem possessed by the spirits of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath lost in a swirl of colored mental states. The Druid will not remain a secret much longer.
